Name: The Berkeley Hotel - Location: Scunthorpe

Address: Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, DN15 7DS [01724 842333]
Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

This as to be the largest SS pub we've been in. 3 very big rooms, not many drinkers in.  Buses #31,32 go passed.

OBB ?1-46  Alpine ?1-78.

As we all know Sam Smiths under its present leadership has many faults, but generally speaking looking after this country's pub heritage is not one of them. Humphrey still spends an absolute fortune on many of his best pubs and lovingly restores them, at a time when many owners are still gutting and ruining theirs.

CAMRA has just published a lovely little book entitled 'Yorkshire's Real Heritage Pubs' price ?4.99 and the Berkley Hotel is described as "one of the best preserved road houses in Britain". Judging by the photos of the interior, although not listed, Sam Smiths have skilfully restored the interiors to how they would have looked when it opened in 1940.

I know Humphrey has many, many faults and is probably ill. He causes much heartache to his employees and customers alike, but Sam Smiths have lots of listed and 'heritage' pubs and he always pays a great deal of attention to their refurbishments. I think we should at least give the present owner credit for doing this so that future generations are able to enjoy what a proper pub should look like.

Yorkshire's Real Heritage Pubs'?  The Berkeley Hotel is in Scunthorpe...which is in Lincolnshire, not Yorkshire!  Oh dear oh dear oh dear!

You are generally right though bigjim, the money spent on the pubs is great and there are lots of great things about Samuel Smith's Brewery and pub chain.  This forum is a great medium of expression, and the positive things mentioned seem to get eclipsed by the negative (and I'm guilty as charged too).

So i take it that they were enjoying their pints then.

What the new menu that is advertised on the chalk board. Only know of the sandwich change and the new leather bound cover on them.
