Name: The Barley Corn - Location: Scholes

Address: 68 Main Street, Scholes, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS15 4DH [0113 264 6956]
Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

Visited here the other day, out of interest. It looked jsut like a hosue from the roadside, as it was a red bricked building, with a large extension on the back. The garden had a new fence recently, but the garden its self was quite tatty. The land lady was friendly enough and got a decent pint of Old Brewery.Photos to folllow

I went passed on a walk the other day, but I was too early it was closed. I must say it is in a nice area. I do not know if photo#3 will come out clear enough for you to read?

Used to be a great little pub when we used to visit a few years ago.
I seem to remember missing the top step on my way out once - left a lot quicker than I expected to! :o

Back to your first pic Ian, is that one of then new fangled ash trays hanging from the top of the railings?  ;D

Could I take this opportunity to warn people of the standards that this public house is being run to and to avoid it at all costs. Having been a sam's drinker for many years & visited many of their pubs, it's been all too clear to see the demise of a once great brewery, but a visit to this place left me shell shocked. The floors in the tap room & behind the bar hav'nt seen a mop in months and the toilets were a public health hazard. All this being noted while waiting 10 minutes to get served (not exaggerating!) and being told by one of the locals not to complain for fear of getting barred!! A really sad state to a pub i used to frequent quite often even as short as 2 or 3 years ago.

A new couple have taken over this pub now, they have been there about 3 weeks. Apparently there has been a relief couple for the previous 4 weeks or so. Humphrey msut still have a bank of relief managers willing to run his pubs.

Anyone visited this one recently? It's one of the next on my list but if it's still as bad as these people make out, it might be worth giving it a miss.

I went over yesterday (bank holiday monday). I got there at ten past 12 and although the lights were on, it was shut!

I suppose in hindsight I maybe should have found out the opening times, but I was a little surprised that it was shut on a bank holiday lunchtime.

On my last visit here i also went jsut after midday and foudn it shut. So I rang the bell and the manager at the time said that it opened at 1pm. Not sure if the same managers are there still. I now tend to ring and check the opening times before setting off to visit.

Been in the Barley Corn today, only one other person in.  He told me that was because football was on the telly. The Obb was good.   The managers have only been in a few months.  I've taken so many photos I'm having to post them over two posts..

Most of these photos will remain for members only.

The outside shots..........

It is a pretty standard SS pub in a housing area. Glad the OBB was good, the last time i was there is was not the best. Were you the only person in this pub ? Seems rather quiet. Another pub that has a problem with smokers leaving the tab ends outside on the pavement. Residents next to SS pubs dont like to have litter outside the public bars. Several letters have been recieved by one Council that i know of.

Just realised there is a quick reply feature!! I am sooo much a technophobe!!
The price differnces further south I can undarstand, although not perhaps that much. But when you have pubs within a twelve mile radius and the prices vary like they do, I can't understand it. I have been told that the prices are varied according to rateable value of the property, but I think this has been discussed on a different topic.
