Name: The Anchor Tap - Location: Tower Bridge

Address: 28, Horselydown Lane, Bermondsey, London, SE1 2LN [020 7403 4637]
Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

I liked this pub...went in on a Sunday about 10pm and the place was just heaving...and then everybody got chucked out and a lot of business was lost.

Somebody had gone to a lot of trouble making the chalkboards look really nice and appealing.

The pub had a main bar, with games room, pool room and snug with also a side-bar.  Upstairs was a number of rooms, mainly for dining in.  Some people were coming in asking for food, but then it was dinner time.  There were two stairwells.  One I particularly liked, which can be seen in the photos below.  I would not liked to have gone down them after a few pints, while carrying a pint!

Pool room.  Note the chalk board.  More than just a lazy effort.

New one for me SSOB paying someone to paint the boards. When food was available the managers wrote the boards themselves.

Hmmm.

An interesting fact about The Anchor Tap is that Dr. Samuel Johnson compiled his famous dictionary working at a room here.

I'm pretty sure this is complete hogwash and there is no known connection between Dr Johnson & The Anchor Tap. To the best of my knowledge the dictionary was compiled in Dr Johnsons lodgings in Gough Square, now a museum (worth a visit), just round the corner from the Olde Cheshire Cheese.

They've probably confused it with the Anchor at Bankside by Southwark Bridge which used to be the Thrales Brewery Tap. Dr Johnson was close to the Thrales (especially Mrs Thrale :-X), so probably did go there.

Also, unless it's improved dramatically the Anchor Tap is a very, very long way from being one of the best pubs in London.
