No need for violance

If only that was true! But in the real world it isn't, otherwise we'd all be speaking German, and gassing anyone we didn't like! (No Humphs isn't part of the Third Reich - well I don't think so anyway!)

Unfortunately, it would appear that Humphs has never really experienced the real world - born into a job and wealth. He probably can't grasp what it is like to lose your job, and with it - self-respect, financial means to support your family, and in many cases - losing contact with many friends - feeling alone and depressed.

No matter what society we have created to combat violence and aggression over the last hundreds or thousands of years - whilst modern man has been evolving over the last 1 million years, we've only survived by being able (when cornered) to fight back, and defend ourselves. It's built into our programming, along with nearly all other species on this planet.

Humphs has the luxury of almost limitless legal resources, so that he can engage others to fight his fights for him, with the money his ancestors made by providing a product, and popular public service. Now he uses this money to fight the public, and his staff!!

However, he probably can't grasp the idea that when you corner a man, and threaten him and his family livelihood - in his usual casual manner, and with at least more than a suspicion of legality - that the in-built instinct of man is aroused, and the consequences could range from anything such as swearing - through to lashing out - with the latter potentially have grave consequences for all parties concerned. He could even push someone a little unstable, to plan and pre-meditate some form of revenge.

Many a time through these forums have I suggested that Humphs 'bullyboy tactics' could result in him becoming the victim of violence - but he is either ignorant to the fact - or simply not bothered! I'm still amazed that nothing more serious has happened yet.

What makes things even worse is, as he takes over as area manager in yet more places - he is spreading his meagre inexperienced resource, even thinner still. As far as I'm aware - he's never managed a pub in his life (unless someone can tell me otherwise), and I certainly wouldn't think he would tolerate the behaviour of someone like himself.

I've heard of so much chaos going on with new inexperienced managers, who despite their best efforts, have little training and support, so that when things go pear-shaped, they get it in the neck from their customers, Humphs, then punished in the pocket, and then a finally kicked in the family jewels (metaphorically speaking) by being given the old heave-ho on nothing more than a drop of a veil - in the same fashion that the Christians were tortured to death by the simple say of a Roman Emperors.

I bet Humphs would have loved that job too  ;)

Rumour has it that the hump came across a manager who did not want to get sacked, and as a result the hump now has a sore nose.If this is true he may wake up to the fact that you cannot keep treating people the way he does.

It seems to me that there is only one thing Humphrey is interested in and that is is bricks and mortar and for one reason only, the future generation of Smiths; he is protecting his assets.

Managers, bar staff, brewery staff are not considered an asset in his eyes, only a necessary evil, that is why they are treated so badly.

He does not understand that staff are your most important asset and without good staff you have nothing.

Living close to Appleton Roebuck we used to watch one of his houses being renovated with interest as we heard rumours that it was going to be a farm shop.  That would, I am sure, have been greatly received by the locals as the village has no facilities at all.
However the renovation has now appeared to have stopped and the boundary fences are an eyesore.
Had anyone any ideas what is going on there?

Yes Alfie you are right, during my time with SS we had four re-furbs all done on a minimum budget, cutting corners when possible. He does spend a lot on pubs that don,t warrant it,but its his cash.Yes he does things in the traditional way when it suits, but just have a tour round Taddy and see how bad it really is,the car park has been a mess for over 20 years and cost Selby council thousands.SS beer and lager is second to none but the bloke refuses to promote it.Come on hump do the right thing and love thy neighbour (thats from the Bible)as you should know being a Christian and avid church goer, which I am not too sure about, please show some compassion for your overworked managers.

One good aspect is that when he does decide to renovate one of his properties he does it properly using traditional building methods & designs that are sympathetic with the buildings architecture. One example is the Tadcaster vicarage (trouble is it took about 7 years to complete it), there are many more examples in Tad. He is keeping his direct works building department and his in house architects very busy. The pubs in London / Fitzrovia are also done to a high standard.

Also all the agricultural land that he owns around Oxton, Healaugh, Acaster Malbis is well looked after, all the fields have neatly cut hawthorn hedging and all the gates have been recently replaced. As you drive around it is easy to spot the SS land because so much tidier than the rest.

Other than the above examples i agree that he does alot more harm than good.
