Limestone Quarries - nr Tadcaster
« on: Apr 12 - 2010 »
There has been mention on here before about Humphrey owning a quarry near Tadcaster and having supplied York Minster. Well, news reaches my ears as they say, that indeed this is true but not that he owns one, but three limestone quarries near Tadcaster and had been supplying York Minster until he put the prices up. More info to follow.

Now this news gives a whole new meaning to a 'vertically integrated' business - how many others can claim to own the damned quarry, that supplies the stone, to build the pub, to sell the beer!

Yes, HS has a quarry at Toulston just past the Grammar School towards Bramham and many a rockery stone have I obtained there. I haven't heard of any others though. All the new Persimmon Houses in Taddy were built using the limestone from the quarry, actually I did hear somewhere that HS was on the board at Persimmon when they were built but I could be wrong on that one.

I'd love to think that was true - but I doubt it very much because there wouldn't seem to be any reason for it - he doesn't need the money; he wouldn't be interested in the kudos, but most importantly he hates publicity. Membership of the Board would be made very public and his mugshot would have to adorn the Annual Report - sadly just another rumour I fear - unless someone can prove us wrong.....................

I understand that HS bought a quarry so that he could get stone to complete the extenstion to Widow Cullen's Well in Lincoln.  I don't know which quarry it was, where it is or even how true the story is but it doesn't seem unlikely reading below.

Do you have any idea of the address?  There's a possibility it could be the quarry he bought to get the stone for Widow Cullen's Well.

Looking at Google Maps aerial view there seems to be quite a few quarries near Stamford of varying size.

The buildings in Stamford town centre are nearly all made of stone similar to Widow Cullen's Well.

Sorry Darkieboy,it was a off the cuff remark made to me as we talked about the bottle Museum.  I was told quite a few things, but most I cannot post on a open forum.
