Oxton Hall, Tadcaster
« on: May 10 - 2010 »
This is a aerial view of Oxton Hall, Tadcaster.  I believe it is THE HUMP's lair!

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Oxton+Hall,+Oxton+Ln,+Oxton,+Tadcaster,+LS24+8DX,+UK&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=12.605358,28.256836&ie=UTF8&split=0&hq=&hnear=Oxton+Hall,+Oxton+Ln,+Oxton,+Tadcaster,+North+Yorkshire+LS24+8DX,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.885207,-1.245908&spn=0.002896,0.010986&t=h&z=17

If you look on Google Street View you will see that there's a big stone wall around the estate, which I presume is to keep disgruntled former managers out!

It's a 30 hectare site, not sure how big it is in old money.  More info: http://www.parksandgardens.ac.uk/component/option,com_parksandgardens/task,site/id,2537/Itemid,292/

Not a bad place for a street cleaner.

Was told that Humphrey can be seen cleaning up rubbish from the streets of Tadcaster as he walks home from his office, in the early hours of the morning.

Who said he did not have his uses. Being serious, it's a pity the rubbish is there in the first place.

Just come across this information on the british buildings list. He must have let someone come and have a look round in the past. I also have heard that he had a lot of lagging pipe removed which he was over charged for, can you believe that Humphrey actually got ripped off.

Probably, but i have heard that parts of it are boarded up and that he only lives in one wing, hence saving money.

God, can you imagine if Mr. R. Moat had been an ex Sam Smith's manager.  Lots of hiding places around Smiffy's pad eh!:P

In my previous life I had to visit the Hall occasionally through my job. This was about 20 years ago and the only rooms lived in then were the kitchen and a further room downstairs, never got upstairs.
Recently hard that he is now carrying his shoes in the plastic bag he carries as even with beer mats they have virtually fallen apart. Now wearing wellies and changes into the shoes for meetings etc. Apparently he went into a local store and asked for one welly to replace one that was worn but was refused stating only sold in pairs. A bit of an argument ensued but the shopkeeper won!!

Asking for one welly? Surely this stuff is made up?! If not, somebody out there should be writing a book - there's quite a bit of material on here already.

Hi all
You may be interested to know that Humphrey not only owns Oxton Hall, but also the Nun Appleton Estate and Hall next door. He purchased the Hall and estate back in 1985 from the Dawson family and has since let the Grade 2 Hall fall into very poor condition.

Interestingly he applied twice for planning permission to remove the tower and associated buildings from the main building which was turned down by the council. As a result, he has allowed this fine and historic 300 year old building (linked to Fairfax and Milner family) to fall into rack and ruin.

The estate was  closed down to the locals in the 90's (the Hall has a theatre which he has shut down - Appleton Roebuck drama society used it) with all the entrance ways to th estate gated. The estate has also tried to close the public right of ways - all details available on the net.

As a friend of the Dawson family, and having many happy times at Nun Appleton Hall, I am saddened by the events that have been allowed to unfold. On a recent 'secret' visit I have noticed that the Hall has had parts of the tower removed with out the Grade 2 permission - so I am currently chasing this with English Hertitage and other interetsed bodies.

It is always very interesting to have details of property owned by Humphrey Smith - I would be especially interested to know if the local conservation officer from Selby District Council is aware of what you allege.

Had a bit of time today so went & had a look at Nun Appleton Hall, drove down towards Holme Green and met a dead end with security gates, which were shut but is apparently a bridleway. Below is a link to another picture of what i saw as didn't have a camera with me. Could just see Red Lodge on the lefthand side.

Got a little further along another lane and found a dead end but had a bridleway and seemed to end onto another road into the estate. The sign said private no right of way.

When i have more time i have been told that you can see the hall from Ryther on the otherside of the river. Also might do a circular walk round and see what is actually there.

Sam Smiths also own Fircroft in Tadcaster.
It is another Grade 2 listed building (built 1890's) that they bought & it has remained empty & boarded up for at least 10 years. The SS gardeners go & cut the grass & keep the gardens tidy.
It used to be an old peoples home before SS bought it. Nice stained glass window & lovely grounds would make a fantastic luxury hotel or nice HQ office.

I think they may also own the big old house in Healaugh.

Where does Oliver live, I thought he lived at Nun Appleton Hall?
