Point 1
Incidentally, I might add that I have heard of at least three venues with open WiFi access - although not necessarily provided by their management - and possibly provided from nearby. So I suppose if someone was watching something on their iPhone, with ear buds in, then most would be non the wiser.

Point 2
Ultimately, if I was Humphs, I would have to ask myself, 'is it such a good idea to keep on upsetting people?' Surely life was more enjoyable when all of his employees and customers would (honestly) smile at him and show the respect he earned at that time - now quite a number of years ago.

Point 3
Humphs - why not have a website (which you would have full control over) where you could promote your products, history, and other positives - and also dispel any incorrect roumors. You could also have a much more effective way to communicate with your staff - and even guage feeling through feedback? If you like. I could get my webmaster to talk with you further on the idea.

Some valid points, from which an attempt at logical escape  would be wasted effort. I make these observations in order,
Point 1-
My daughter was listening to some tunes on her mobile phone in the beer garden of one of my cherished watering holes, near Knutsford last year. (Sam's of course!). She was asked by the temporary manager to turn it off as they were not permitted music in any form. No indication if a licensing or co. policy issue; I presume the latter. She must have had the ears of Superman, as she was inside the pub at the time!

Point 2
If Humphrey Smith was indeed respected before, how can he stand the loss of  that respect that is apparent now? Pride may be a sin, but really, if it was me, I'd feel somewhat incomplete to say the least. There is hope, isn't there, that if he returned to past form, things could change for the better?

Point 3
I could not agree more! The lack of an official website for one of our very few remaining quality independent brewers, who are STILL held in high esteem by very many people, is a great pity. I would love to be able to keep up with whats happening, and am extremely interested in their history, products, and locations. This forum may not have appeared if this was otherwise? Should the nettle be grasped, Mr.Smith, please keep it real and honest, don't assume we are all nincompoops, embrace us and we would do likewise. Onwards and upwards- corny but for Heavens sake, have a think about it, please, there is help available just for the asking I am sure.

I'm off to my 'local' Sam's now and it's a 30 minute drive. And worth it!
Keep taking the waters, as will I.

Hi there jackrussel,

Your daughter could use headphones...I personally would be a bit annoyed if someone played their own music in the beer garden.  Headphones would solve this and help to overcome being spotted listening to music.

You are quite right about the website...if there was a genuine and honesty official one, then this website may become obsolete...apart from Humphrey Smith's antics regarding treatment of his staff.

All businesses need to have a performing rights licence (PRS) if music is played and can be heard by others, ie, customers or just members of the public. A number of businesses have been fined for not abiding by this, so I'm sorry to say the member of staff was right to ask your daughter not to play it aloud.

I was told a bit back about a member of staff asking head office if they could hold a private 65 birthday party.  Head Office (Mr H Smith)  said yes but no music to be played.  I suppose you can't fault him for sticking to the rules for everybody. :(

Your quite right bubble, except when there is a private party. Then(so long as it is in a seperate room and away from the public bar), it is quite legal to have music etc. without a PRS licence.  It is company policy that kicks in then that prevents the music being played.  This was explained to us by our then area manager, when one of our daughters reached her 18th birthday.  We had to hire our local clubs function room.  Crazy if you ask me, but as someone has said, consistant.
