How MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: Jun 4 - 2010 »
I was told today by someone from John Smith's that Sam Smith's saved ?18,000,000 in fee's ect when he took all the TV ect out of his pubs.  Somebody else said that it sounds about right.

Seems high to me. what do you think?

?18 million divided by 300 pubs is ?60000 each! Don't think entertainment licences are that expensive.!

Can't see the ?18m being anywhere near correct, even over a long period of time.

I'm inclined to agree yorkie - but stuff like this turns up regularly and helps feed the mythology that is part and parcel of everything Sam Smith!

I'd be inclined to say that there are as many as 400 pubs...even so, that's ?45,000 each.  A PPL, Sky TV, fixtures and fittings, etc...you could be looking at a start up bill not too far from ?18m....but certainly not running costs.

If Sam Smiths have 800 pubs that would make it ?22,500 each.

So maybe ?18,000,000 may not be far out.

The plot thickens.

Don't know how many hotel room's SS have, but if the room's do not have a TV in them, then that's another saving by not paying for the BBC licence fee on them.

Do not know how much Hotels pay for a TV licence? But I cannot see them having to pay full pops for every room in the hotel.

If a hotel as 20 rooms and it pays ?145-50 for each room that's a whopping ?2910 per year.

If you own a few hotels / pubs that do B & B it can soon mount up.

Re Hotels and TV licence.

You pay ?145-50 for the first 15 rooms.

Then ?145-50 for every more 5 bedrooms the hotel as.

I would say in the case of Sam Smith's hotels it would be chicken feed.

That isn't overly much, as you say Ian.  What would be expensive though is Sky Sports.  This is usually based on a pub's floor space, and can be thousands per year per pub.  And then each pub would need a Public Performance License (PPL) for live music and recorded jukebox music (which itself would also incur a charge, although would generate income which would usually more than cover the cost, depending on the agreement with the jukebox company).

How many Sams pubs have ever had Sky Sport? I suspect very few, and you can't save what you didn't spend in the first place. I still think the ?18 million is totally unrealistic.

Perhaps it's not a saving, but a cost, should Samuel Smith get TVs, etc in their pubs.

Very good point. When I was told about it, I did think it was high. But he was adamant it was right.

Most of them when it was the same price as a domestic viewing card. Quite a few houses the equipment was paid for by raffles and wip rounds etc. When Murdoch started charging for buisness use on a 'rateable value' basis the cost rocketed. From personal experiance the cost went from ?12.50 month to ?100 month in one year. The cost today for the average pub is well over ?300 month Thats when they started to go, depending on who was Area manager at the time. Yes you will have guessed FOB and LB were the first to give them the heave oh..

PRS approx costs are
TV ?150 pa
Juke box ?250 pa

Sky TV for pubs ?100 per month.

So that only adds up to about ?1500 a year.

The TV's & videos that were taken out of the pubs were sold to the residents of Tad in the Shann Hotel (Humphs hotel).
