May i suggest you have quick look at either Morning advertiser or Publican sites to find out the true cost of pay-tv to the pub trade. Of course we all like to quote hear say but in 2001 the cost of pay-tv(sky) in one house i know of, increased by 450%. It was not only Sams who ditched it. Please ask any none Sams how much they are paying and you will be terrified at the cost to the buisness but what would the average punter care about those costs eh.

PS Only 4 proper Hotels, Hop Pole, Berkely, Blue bell, Harewood arms(if it is still open). He did try to open one down south but got knocked back.Yes he did chuck out the TVs when he got rid of the Music. ;)

I have seen quotes from Sky for my local.  ONLY 700 pounds per month.  Crazy, and in fairness to the maniac, it's no wonder he wont have it.

The thing is that we, the customer, need a variety of pubs to go in, to suit different needs.  I am not against a ban on tellies and jukeboxes, it can be a great thing to just sit and chat.  However, if the pub is dead it can be disconcerting to the one or two customers in there, especially large pubs.  Pubs like Chandos, in the middle of London, don't need to rely on tellies for customers as they have a large through-put of customers (tourists) and probably only a tiny number of regular customers.  The likelihood of an American tourist wanting to watch the telly while on holiday and siteseeing is remote, in my opinion.  Saying that, there are some Samuel Smith's pubs that would greatly benefit from tellies and music.

?700.00 for Sky doesn't sound out of the ordinary.

Totally agree with you Darkie Boy in all you say, and no 700 pounds isn't out of the ordinary.  I know of pubs that pay considerably more.  I was just bringing the cost into perspective, as some seem to think that Sky isn't over expensive.  But as you have already said, some pubs would benefit, then some pubs wont.
