No time to explane now, but a manager down in london has done a runner and left the pub unlocked for 6 days before anybody found out. Will post more tomorrow when I get back home.

Went into some SS pubs in central London last night and in one of the pubs I overheard some customers talking about a unnamed Sam Smith's pub in the London area.  The manager did a runner just before Christmas with the takings, he also left the pub unlocked. It was unattended until HS walked in 6 days later to find the manger and a lot of stock gone.

Not unsuprising at the moment, the same seems to have happened in Rochdale to. This i think makes the older and wiser managers even worse off, and tarnished with the same brush. Humphrey must be getting extremely pissed off about this now.

According to a customer i spoke to today, one of the managers of a Sam's pub in York has run off with the takings. Not sure which one though, anyone know or heard any more about this?

The police must have a special "Samuel Smiths Unit" to deal with all the stolen takings.

I have heard that ex managers have trouble getting thier bonds back when they throw in the towel, could this be the reason that they leave with the takings. On the other hand it could be that humphrey just takes on the wrong sort of managers.

I think it's a bit of both.  If I was a manager and thinking of leaving or expecting to get sacked, then I would make sure that I had enough cash to cover the non-return of the bond.

I think your right, the way i hear it is hump takes a dim view of managers leaving him, so he delays paying bonds wages and anything else owed as long as possible. so managers are forced to take whats owed themselves to make sure of getting it.

I agree with the reasons, to the managers are the wrong sort of people to run a pub or that particular type of pub whether it be rural or a city centre. Also i understand that if the manager has not been paid fully, or is in the situation that they think they are about to get fired. Then they take the takings to cover the bond money.

I believe that a manager of a Sams pub in the Tadcaster area has run off with the takings and locked up and left.

I wonder just how much this is costing Sam's

1. Changing Locks at all the pubs every time a manager leaves.  He must have a army of locksmiths on standby.

2. Doing a stock take every time.

3. Trying to find a relief to stand in.

4. Training new managers (he must be training 10 to 20 a week)

5 Name change on Licence for pub?

Would it not be cheaper to increase the staff hours and keep his managers happy,or is that too simply?

I think it is well into the thousands of pounds.

Very true Ian and DB, dread to think how much it is costing him.Have heard that there are no new managers on a training course this week. So plenty more vacancies left open.

TBH you can't really blame the brewery for holding on to the bond if the manager had decided to help himself to the pub's takings.

I'm sure running an efficient, lean and mean pub estate (which sometimes means sacking poorly performing managers) pays for the odd bill from the locksmith. Aren't the stocktakrs and training course there anway?

Sometime,s you cannot blame manager,s for taking there bond from taking,s as the Hump has been known not to repay it,also if he treated the manager,s with respect there would be no reason to take the cash, but we know that won,t happen

Have heard that the managers at the Cricketer's Arms have left with the weekends takings. Not sure how long they have worked for the brewery or why they have suddenly decided to leave.
