How come the beer is so cheap?
« on: Jan 25 - 2011 »
How come Sams ales are so cheap in comparison with other brews. I know Humph's strict regime will be cited, but there must be some other reason. Why dont other breweries follow suit, or is it all down to  Sams being a private concern? A pub near us has closed, although it is up for sale, but that doesn't mean that it will open again. When we came here 30 years ago you had a job to get to the bar on a Friday and Sat. night. Another pub shut altogether and is now a housing estate, but there must be double the people now than when we came. A cheap offer here is ?2.20 a pint, how can they compete with Sams prices? Ok, we haven't got a Sams here so it is not a direct competion issue. But if Sams can hold their prices since 1990 why cant others?

Admin note - Oops! Sorry Ian, I've just deleted your post in error!

That OK Max.

I cannot remember what I posted, but it was to say that I disagreed with what Antthe2nd had posted. I don't think my post was rude or provocative in any way.

But then I'm a thick skinned  building worker.

Samuel Smith's prices are not as uncommon as they might at first seem.  JD Waterspoon's have over 700 pubs flogging beer from ?1.49 per pint.  When I go home to Lancashire (The Queen's own county - we don't have a ficticious character representing us, IAN!), I am forced to pay ?1.72 per pint of Tetley's (would prefer Thwaites to the Northampton brew).  When in Hull the other weekend, I paid ?1.60 in a brewery tap for a most excellent pint.

Sorry Antthe2nd, but I must agree with Ian on this one. Not everyone is going to see things the same way all of the time - and being able to debate difference of opinions (especially with regards to Sam's practices) is at the essence of this site.
Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

Speaking as a atheist I can't argue with you, but I'm sure some might/will. :o

Re cheap beer, there's a bar just around the corner from the Ye Olde Blue Bell in Hull that do a excellent pint of Worthington cheaper then OBB.

Just teasing Ian, I'm an atheist too.  Which bar is selling the Worthington's?  Is it cask or keg?  And is the bar okay?

It's the Courts Bar on the corner of Bowlalley Lane and The Land of Green Ginger. It also's sells that beer that comes from a place called Lancashire, Boddington's at the same price.  If you do go in then you must look at the name plate of the flats opposite. They have the best address in Britain.

Ah, Boddington's, the cream of...south Wales!  DISGRACEFUL.  However, cask is still brewed in Manchester, by Hydes.

I've found Courts on Google Maps but can't see the name on the flats.

Lets try again.

Cheers Ian.  I've come across Land of Green Ginger as a street on my travels, but never noticed the actual addresses of the properties.

I may be wrong but all these sound like specials rather than across the board low prices. I know Weatherspoons have offers, I've had a few but it brings it home to you when you see prices of ?2.80 and above.

Whizz I was in Dunkeld Scotland last year. 5 pubs in the village/town and the cheapest pint of bitter was ?3-60.

Thats enough to turn a drinking man into a tea total nervous wreck. :(

I'm back in Scotland on Friday for a long weekend this time on the west side. It's a free bar both nights but it's John Smiths (sorry for swearing).  It will be interesting to see how much a pint of beer is up there.
