Brigadier Gerard, York Arms
« on: Mar 25 - 2011 »
Isn't it about time something was done about the amount of foul language in these pubs? There's a guy who's goes in the Arms, gets blathered, is still served, and swears and shouts at the top of his voice. Instead of barring the guy, he's told to be quiet or leave. Since he's had enough already, he usually leaves (very loudly) and comes in the next day to start again. Two couples walked out on Tuesday, some students moved to another part of the pub, and I had one pint and left.
The language in the Brig isn't much better. People effing and blinding very loudly, and neither the staff nor the landlord/landlady doing anything about it. It isn't surprisinging, the landlord is as guilty as the punters. Just to complete my moan, a sign has gone up reminding customers that anyone under the age of 14 must leave by 7pm. Why doesn't it apply to the landlords brat, who keeps running around the pub digging her wheelie trainers into the carpet ? (thereby ruining it). I've been going in for years, but it's getting to the point that from 7 till 10 is a no-no if you want a quiet pint.
Get it sorted, it's no wonder that the York Arms is dead as a do-do most of the time.

I think I know who you mean Pop, he's a friend of mine, he does swear loudly, I wish he wouldn't. It wouldn't be so bad if he kept the volume down, cos lets face it, a lot of people do swear, and that includes some women, it seems to be part and parcel of bar room language, in fact I think some people dont realise that they are swearing. On another note, I've heard through the grapevine that the Arms is shutting down for a bit of refurbishment, any one else heard likewise?

Must say I'm against swearing in public and in front of ladies, but like whizz has said, it's all part of every day life now. Drunks and swearing do go hand in hand and some of Sam's pubs do tend to attract the loud / foul  mouth customer including a lot  of ladies.  I'm a great believer that the manager sets the standards and if the manager and/or staff swear that means it's OK for the customer to swear.

I can only see it getting worse in the coming years.  Walk in any city in Britain  and you will hear parents swearing in front or at  their young children. The same children will grow up thinking that swearing is the norm.

I think I'm turning into a grumpy old man. >:(

I get the ****ing feeling that some ****ers can't string a ****ing sentence together without ****ing swearing!!

Seriously though, I have a mate who you'd think had a certain disorder once he's had a beer or seven and it's embarrassing when he starts, generally in earshot of 'civilians'.  I'm not even surprised when I hear toddlers effing and blinding because that's all they get to hear at home.

I completely agree. The swearing seems to be a common theme in Sams pubs. We used to go to the Angel in Tad a lot but don't bother now thanks to the bunch of p*ss heads that sit in the front window swearing and shouting as you walk into the pub. Where are the days when a landlord would either kick these people out or send them to the Tap Room where they could do what they liked. The majority of Sams pubs in Tad seem to be like this now, thankfully the Greyhound at Saxton is one sanctuary where it's properly run, you can go in as a family and have a fantastic time.

hi all i must say im dead against swearing in the bar or any area
youre a fool if u think you can stop it all together but you can controll it
in my local the landlord has got a swear box (all proceeds to charity) if they swear loudly they must pay
if they refuse there drink is removed and told to leave for the rest of the day and come back when they can controll the volume so other customers cant hear,  if they are asked to leave on 3 occasions they are then told not to bother coming back
i must say this has worked and apart from the odd slip you never hear any loud bad language which now shows with the amount of ladies now coming in which was not the case a year ago
this has to be a credit to both managerment couple

I must say that a don't like swearing and bad language, but in several Sams pubs now this has happened alot more recently since new managers have taken over. Many Sams pubs are lively and entertaining when customers have had a few drinks, but swearing is still wrong when its loud and unruly. A swear box has been used before in my local, but got thrown away when the last managers left.

Hollybush in Edenthorpe - lots of drunken f****** etc at full volume. Why? because the manager sits with the culprits and joins in.

Ridgewood in Edenthorpe - no noticable drunks or swearing. Why? Because the manager stops it as soon as it starts & doesn't swear himself (in public).

Many former Hollybush regulars won't go in now because of the bad language and have moved to the Ridgewood.

So there are decent managers in some Sams pubs, it's all down to setting standards and enforcing them.

Problem is swearing has become fairly commonplace nowadays.
Serious respect to managers who manage to stamp it out. We need more of those sort of pubs 8)

In days gone past, pubs had men only bars, mainly for that reason, swearing has always gone on in a male environment, the problem now is the volume, and of course females are present now. I must say that it is embarassing when a new couple come in and someone is swearing at the top of their voice.

I think that in days gone "most" pubs were so full that the noise level was high enough to drown out swearing.  Now, because pubs are not so busy, it is more audible.  Also, there are more women in pubs than there used to be a few years ago, which may mean more complaints.  However, saying that, in some pubs the women are more vocally noticeable than the men.
