Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

Happened to drive past this pub recently - it's having the complete Humphrey heritage treatment - builders are virtually taking it apart - so much for rumours that he didn't have the money for major refurbs. The new pub/hotel in Bath will be costing a fortune as well.

Looking forward to it opening again- miss going in but I think it was ready for an 'overhaul'. Hope the new staff do it justice.

Walked past yesterday. They have laid hardcore for carpark awaiting tarmac. Asked worker, he says opening 'end of next week', about the 25th. March then eh? cant wait. In these times for them to have gone to so much effort and expense is amazing. See you all there.....

Any news on the new landlord etc yet? Drove past today and saw the most recent landlord and landlady coming out of it.

Called in over the weekend - only Humphrey would consider it was worth refurbishing all the extensive outbuildings as well as the pub! A superb job, just lacking a bit of patina though. No Alpine, but a cracking pint of OBB and a cracking barmaid to boot. (Apologies - in this politically correct world I guess we're not allowed to say that.)

Was in this pub yesterday, because a mile or so away is Arkaan's an ex-pub that is a Curry House now with no drinks licence.
Coffee-coloured walls, flag floors and a nice new bar as the hub of the pub.
A quaint room at the front that can only accessed from outside and three other rooms that are connected internally accessed by the side door near the newly tarmac-ed car park at the side.

A glance through the back door into the side garden revealed new, round, chunky, wooden tables.

My mate ordered dark Mild before realising it was the new 2.8% ABV variety. He could tell when he supped it, but he liked it a lot.

They were selling food, currys, chips and burgers and desserts ... very good, but the chips looked anaemic.

HS has done a good job at the Spread Eagle.
It's a bit iggledy-piggledy wall-wise, but it always was ... very characterful.
