Samuel Smith's Cider
« on: Apr 26 - 2011 »
Not been happy with the cask Old Brewery Bitter in my local Samuel Smith's pub of late, and after a day of digging I fancied a cold cider.

I tried the Samuel Smith's Reserve Cider at a mighty 5.2% for the first time and thought it was not bad at all for a fizzy cider.

Does anyone know who makes the draught cider for Samuel Smith's?

There was a rumour on this forum that it was Weston's that made it and someone suggested it was Stowford Press.  However, Stowford Press is not as strong, only 4.2% I think.

I can't imagine Samuel Smith's making all of their drinks, certainly not in Tadcaster...although he might try.

Always used to be a stronger version of Stowford Press and it certainly tastes very similar.

Where?  It's difficult if not impossible to brew cider in the same place as beer and lager because of the risk of yeast cross-contamination, which is why no-one else does it. The equipment is also different - you can't make cider in beer and lager fermenters, or filter and pasteurise it in the same equipment. The clue that it's produced elsewhere is also in the price being much higher than their own products.  I've no doubt the cider is kegged at the brewery, but tanked in from elsewhere.

So there's a complete cider plant in the brewery? Concentrate doesn't have alcohol in it - still has to be fermented.

I'm really impressed with the draught cider - it's possibly the best non-real cider that I have had in a long time.

Been doing some digging yesterday and it turns out that my opinion about the cider being made elsewhere is wrong as apparently the brewery is indeed registered with HMRC as a cider maker as well as a brewer.  The cider very definitely used to be made by Westons as I used to deal with them when they were producing it but I suppose Hump eventually got the pip (sorry) at having to buy in. The fresh flavour also apparently comes from using a wine yeast which is something new to me.

Interesing stuff.  Perhaps the problems mentioned with Old Brewery Bitter and other beer products of late is a symptom of producing cider on the same site.

Personally, I would have said that the cider was a stong Stowford's Press - it's certainly very similar.

Could well be. It is very similar to Stowford Press but Sams have a habit of wriggling out of agreements by almost copying licensed products, like they did with Alpinewhen they terminated the Ayingerbrau agreement.
