My understanding is that a pint of beer is a pint of liquid.  Any head therefore, should be extra.  Based on this, then only over-sized pint pots legally contain the correct amount of beer.

I would like to see what Humphrey Smith would do if over-sized pints became a legal requirement.

Oversized glasses keep cropping up in the trade but the brewing lobby always kick and scream and frankly, I think they're right to do so as the vast majority of pubs are happy to top up.  If oversized glasses became law the only result would be prices going up as most pubs struggle to maintain 100% stock sales even with freeflow due to spillage, waste and (proper) line cleaning.  The 5% Hump is obsessed with is because the British Beer and Pub Association guidelines allow for a 5% head, and no trading standards department will act unless a pub consistently serves over 5% short pints. The problem there is that to achieve 5% the manager has to take into account waste, spillage and line cleaning so in real terms they have to serve pints that average about 8% short.   Many pub operators operate stringent stock control procedures but I very much doubt if any have the brass neck to actually insist on a surplus in their conditions of employment and I doubt it would stand a full test in a court.

I guess the time has come to test this particular condition in his terms of employment then. Any volunteers?

Surely the fact is that most people, particularly in the north, like their pint to be served with a small head on it which roughly works out at 5% of the glass. It's not robbing from the customer as top ups are/should always be available.
Surely it's then just a question of whether the manager is going to pocket that extra 5% or whether the brewery is going to get it. Considering the brewery brews the beer, owns the pub and has to pay all expenses related to running the pub, I would suggest the later is more worthy of receiving the 5%

But the manager never gets to pocket the 5% as no matter who he works for as it's always a struggle to keep good stocks. The 5% will barely make up for spillage, waste and line cleaning. Even an owner-operator will have difficulty getting 100% out of draught products. The problem here is Humps insistence on a surplus, as opposed to just breaking even which a lot of pub operators regard as a bonus.

Let the brewer have his 5%!!! NOT to the detriment of the front line work force. If every NORTHERN customer asks for top up to a pint, 5% can NEVER be achieved.   Put the price up 5%!!!!  >:(

PS How dare you suggest that a manager might 'POCKET' that extra 5%?? >:( >:( >:(

It doesn't surprise me. I've moaned on this site a few times about the state of a once fantastic boozer, and nothing has been done. Does anyone from Sam's really read this, because if they do, they aren't doing anything about it.

I went in about 2 months ago, one Thusday night, and was a little surprised that the usual foul mouthed men and woman were behaving themselves, and no brat running around. After I'd been in 10 minutes, and feeeling my criticism of the place was a little harsh, the landlord (who I hadn't been able to sdee since he was sitting behind one of the screens) went behind the bar, and he was sober! This was about 10.15 at night!

Had my eyes deceived me?

No. As I saw when I went to the loo, he was sat with his wife and God himself. % minutes later HE left, and everything went back to normal. The usual punters had obviously been warned to behave themselves while HE was in.

I've not been in since, nor am I likely to until someone sorts the place out.

The last Sunday I was in was about 5 in the afternoon, and I didn't enjoy it then. Saturdays is (I assume) about the same, and weekdays, I stopped going in before anytime between 5 and 9.45.
