The Golden Ball, Scarborough.
« on: Jun 10 - 2011 »
We have just had our 7th or 8th temporary manager(s) (in as many months) arrive this week.
After reading some of the comments on this site I can understand why they can't find anyone to take over on a permament basis. What I don't understand is that the barman applied and was ignored, he would have been great, he fitted in really well and works hard. Now he's talking of leaving.
Not having a permament manager may be ok in Humphrey's eyes but it's not good for the pub, or the beer,  that's gotten a bit watery over the last few weeks and lacks body. It don't stick to the glass anymore like it used to!
We need someone permament and soon.

I have to say, the last time I was in (January)  the beer was excellent.

I know of a barman that Humphrey finally relented and let him manage the place due to a dire lack of relief cover.

The word is increased trade, better atmosphere and a great appointment. I will be giving it a go this weekend.

Good luck to the latest crew behind the bar at The Golden Ball. They seem really up for it! Service improved no end in a very short time, beer has improved as well from my original post. They have plans, that's if they stay? I hope they do. Well done.

Why do you think, eastcoastbeerdrinker, that they can't get anybody to run it permanently?
It's a lovely pub.  Is it because of the shortage of staff hours or what?? I really would be interested to know.  I have been in the pub and find it to be a really pleasant and friendly place in a lovely setting.  I would have thought it turned over some good money too. I find it strange that people wouldn't want to live and work there. ::)

The last permanent landlord left well before Christmas last year, he did a very good job and by all accounts Humph did like him. Now, he always slated staff hours as a problem, along with the wages and working all the hours god sends. The barman who fancied having a go and got nowhere also said staff hours are really tight.
It's a cracking pub, fine views over the harbour and usually a great pint. It has three rooms including the lounge that doesn't have a bar in it. The top bar is where everyone crowds in during the summer because (due to staff hours) the bottom bar remains closed. Again, due to staff hours it is virtually the only pub in Scarborough that doesn't have any door staff on on a Saturday night in summer. Food has not been available since the last permament landlord left prior to Christmas.
The temporary guy that is in now seems really enthusiastic. He told me last week that he has agreed to stay for the remainder of summer and he would then "negotiate" with Humph, so that will be the last we see of this chap then I suppose cos I don't think Humph negotiates with anyone - my way or the highway so to speak!

PS - It gets a bit quiet in there during the main winter months but has a reasonable local trade. Nice to sit there on a cold winters night with the coal fire roaring away. Fancied the place myself at one point but her in doors was having non of it. So, I am on the "right" side of the bar still I suppose.

Update re The Golden Ball

Having participated in more than several of their beverage known as Old Brewery Bitter I can confirm it's spot on. New (temp) Manager really pulls an absolutely cracking  pint. Good on him & his staff.

Update:
Yet another management couple arrived during the week. I have lost count now. Strange because the other crew said they were here for the summer at least!

Obviously then Scarborough isn't suitable for a "long" summer (holiday)! ;D

Not as yet! Apparently they also had charge of another SS pub/club around Barnsley so ??? It was a suprising as I said below and the very brief word with the new couple who suggested that the previous couple indeed thought they were here for the summer.
It was really busy Saturday night ( the new couple's first Saturday ) They were really under pressure for most of the night but coped well for newbies. Then a group of lads let the fire alarm off so she thew em out. On the whole they kept cool about it all and continued smiling.

Always has been a good pub serving good ale. I remember years ago spending time sat at the window opposite the harbour supping Sam's and watching the large boats from the Soviet Union unloading their timber onto Magnet Joinery wagons.
It was interesting to see the Hammer and Sickle Ensign waving in the wind from the top of the mast.
Good memories of times gone by.

I to have fond memories of this pub in summers past. Might go sometime in August to see what is happening.
