Running out of stock
« on: Jul 11 - 2011 »
Went into my local last night (outer York), no cider left and was told that when the bitter and lager were empty they were off too!! Must have been a
1)busy weekend
2)none delivery
3)forgot to order

I know it was Magnet cup day at York races on Saturday but surely this would have been thought off by managers
Anyone else have similar problems

I would suspect, judging by the relatively modern cash tills that Samuel Smith's use, that no one forgot to order (unless there was a "computer error" and the till didn't or couldn't place an order).  I'm sure a manager can confirm or deny my synopsis.

In conversation with a manager some time ago, and I asked them what happens when they run out of items, they told me that they rely on good old fashioned guesswork for their beer orders, and they said that the tills don't have a part in the ordering process. In other words, if they run out of something, then it's down to not enough being ordered, or a big run on the item they've run out of, e.g. more cider sold in summer than in winter.

I find it happens more when a relief manager takes over and they have to cope with what's been ordered until the next dray.

Therefore NOT GUILTY.

This is correct that the tills do not play a part in stock management. It is purely the managers job to maintain sufficient stock levels. The brewery phone each Pub approx 3 working days before dray day and the order is given over the phone. Not very high tech huh?
Have also heard that Smiths refuses to change the brewing schedule depending on demand, I.e more cider during summer. In early June was told by a drayman that cider was almost out and they were unable to complete some orders.

Some of his pubs in the big towns or city's are more likely to run out of stuff as the weather and events effect what foot fall you get. This can then lead to selling more lager or cider in the summer time. But i know relatively small Sam's pub running out of lager and then Pure Brew, due to higher than expected demand. But after a couple of weeks, i would have thought that the situation might be rectified.  >:(

My local ran out of OBB last night. "Nobody ordered any" was the reply when asked. "Hoping to get some on Friday". So it will be Saturday at best before it is back on. Great!

I think that dogsboddy's comment about the crisp might just have been a little tongue in cheek.
