Well if he's only got around 200 pubs, how come I've been to around 240 up to date.

Yes interesting as i believe that i have been to more than 200 pubs. But is written in a way that he's conquering the north and not the south. Don't believe that he is economising

Due to economies, the brewery now has one Area Manager who looks after all Samuel Smith?s pubs and recruits all the live-in management couples who run them. If you are a couple interested in managing a Samuel Smith?s pub, please contact the Area Manager on:

 Just tight

In response to the wishy-washy statement refering to the number of pubs, I have written the following:

"The brewery operates in the region of 200 pubs"

Around three hundred "pubs" are listed on this site and on my map (http://www.jamesgretton.co.uk/samuelsmiths/).  So, how do you account for the difference of 100 "pubs"?  Well, around 200 is not precise.  It could be 230 or a little more.  Also, what is a "pub"?  Many of the pubs listed on the forum are technically not pubs, but social clubs and there are perhaps around 40 or more, but I've never counted them and always included them in the "pub" list.  This would mean a conservative number in the region of 270 and not a great difference to accomodate.  This is just over 30 short of the number we believe that there are.  I am happy that there are not 400-450 pubs like often guested (not including the moth-balled ones).

the Ebor at Bishopthorpe near York

I believe that this is the first official mention of a pub by Samuel Smith's for a great many years.

All-in-all, an interesting development by the Brewery.

The one area manager is Humphrey himself. I presume that is his own number and it reflects the desperation to find people willing to work for him since more and more houses are losing their managers either through coming to their senses and resigning or Humphrey sacking them.
As for the number of pubs, I was always led to believe that the company was split into Sam smiths northern and Sam Smiths southern. This fits in with Humphreys obsession with concealing how many outlets he has, so the extra pubs may come under the 'southern' bracket.

I know quite a few that are social clubs and or former ones. But still owned by SS or subsidiary. Not sure that the 400 - 450 is correct as sounds far to many really.

Agreed DB, must be the first time that a SS pub has been publicly announced on the web by the brewery. May be there is some new blood in the brewery or just given more movement to senior people at the brewery.

Right I've just had a count up.

I've had a drink in 216 Sam Smith's public houses and been to 8 that have been closed., too early or the closed day.

So that makes 224, and I've still got plenty to go at.

Somebody is telling porkie pies on the Sam Smith's official website. >:(

We know why Ian, so that we can't get round them all and take pictures. As stated before it's more secretative than MI5 and 6 together. Just a white elephant

It seems to have been added to the foot note on the home page now. No mention of any pubs though.

This is just a bit of speculation.  If Humphrey is know to own some of the pubs privately (i.e. they're not actually in the ownership of the brewery) then maybe others belong directly to other individual members of the family, or trusts that operate for them, or other subsidiary companies.  It wouldn't surprise me if it's all quite knotty.

This could well be the case.  There is also speculation surrounding the ownership of another brewery, which has been discussed at length on this forum a number of times some time ago.
