The general consensus is to avoid Samuel Smith's pubs.  There are many Breweries out there who have managed pubs and tenanted pubs and variations thereof.  Just take a look at their websites and see what is on offer.

But saying that some managers do seem happy working for Sam Smiths.  I would think that if your looking to run a pub for the first time and you don't expect to get past the one year mark, have you anything to lose?

This is from somebody who as never worked in the trade.

Some managers who have worked for Samuel Smith for years do seem happier, but then I believe that they are paid a lot more than the ?25,000 per couple that is currently being offered.

There are easier ways for someone new to the industry to get pitiful training, earn less than minimum wage, be treated like a slave, have to find your own relief manager to get a holiday, etc.

Much as I don't like Wetherspoons pubs, they treat their staff well,  train them properly and prepare people for running a pub of their own, should they get the opportunity.

Still, even Sams would be better than getting suckered into a tenancy or leasehold at some dump that the likes of Enterprise, Punch, and Trust Inns etc are trying to wring cash out of because they can't sell it.

Plenty of breweries that are online and offer managers posts and good training. As stated below the salary on offer at Sams is not the best and you could lose your job after only 11 months. Many longer term managers are happier than the newer ones as the term and conditions are different. But i also think that new managers for Sams need to choose the right pub that they can make it make more money and turn it around. Some are easier than others

I believe that the vacancy there has been filled. Unless the manager there was only temporary the otehr night.
