How much would you pay for a pint
« on: Sep 15 - 2011 »
Here is an interesting article about the cost of a pint. SSOB would have no problems stripping out some of the costs on the list.

Sorry if repeating

So, at 90p cost does that mean based on a three quid pint that the profit is ?2.10? Presumably this means there are some greedy people out there, some with empty pubs. Tetley is three quid around here and I won't pay it. Humph's OBB is "fairly" priced, but by the time you factor the ?3 pint it is cheap by comparison.
Funny enough, I was visiting a friend in Hoyland (Barnsley) on Monday and went out to a few of the village pubs at night (no SS near by). Out of the six we went in they all had less than half a dozen folk in. One of them, the owner of some 26 years was sat in his empty pub. He had a Wentworth brewery special on at ?2.40. Most other stuff including the (in my opinion) horrible J. Smith's was around ?3.00 a pint. I mentioned my preference of Humph's OBB and told him that it was ?1.61 a pint. I then suggested he maybe get a cask or two of OBB to try and at around ?1.61 ish it may attract some customers in. To my astonishment he said that it wouldn't make any difference, people want to pay ?3.00 for a pint. The conversation was then terminated!
Love him or loathe him, Humph does give a great product at decent prices and long may it continue!

I don't think you have read the article fully and it certainly doesn't mean that there is ?2.10 profit on each pint if it costs 90p to brew. There are many overheads in retail trade, rent, heat light, staff, etc, etc. One of the reasons that Humphrey can charge so low a price is that his (large) estate is paid for and stands them at zero in terms of revenue expenditure, coupled with the fact that they are all managed and he pays his staff a very low wage.
Compare this with many of the pub companies who have nothing but a business plan based on borrowed money with a high revenue expenditure, hence they have to charge very high rents that are unsustainable and  pubs close or struggle because prices are so high.
In some ways Humphrey is spot on and is to be reccommended, his enterprise is almost self sustaining, lots of pubs, jobs in pubs & brewery. The down side is that some of his methods would be laughable if they weren't so bizarre. There is definitely a sit com/play based upon Sams & Humphrey, based on  either the brewery or a pub. You heard it here first and the copyright is mine, I will post it on here (or a link anyway) when I have written it.

Yes, you are correct when you say that I didn't read the article properly (hence the question marks) - I just glanced so apologies there!

However, I can't see how a pint of beer no matter how good is worth ?3.00 plus. That's ?24.00 per gallon making petrol look good value!  ???

Not forgetting that out of every pint, 20% of the sale price is VAT.

Fair point about the VAT and the excise duty that is already paid as soon as it leaves the brewery which is 41p per pint I believe. I don't know where I stand on the pricing because Sams is artificially low and out of sync with the rest of the market. We were in Dorset recently and the going rate in an ordinary, decent, proper pub was around ?3.20/30. This was for Palmers a local small independant based in Bridport, the price didn't vary across the area. I used to have this argument with my grandad who could remember a pint being 3d per pint but you could blow his argument out of the water when you discovered that the average wage was 2 shillings per week. If you look at the statistics, alcohol has never been cheaper, taking into account the current pricing of alcohol, in comparison to the average wage. In simple terms, alcohol has never been cheaper, relatively, for most people, you can buy more pints now with your wage packet than ever before.

The excise rate is the reason Humphrey is going to 2.8% on the NEW Alpine, it is the highest strength that attracts the lower excise duty.

I totally agree.  The same argument works for petrol.

I think the cost of inkjet printer ink tops it all. Lexmark ink  is probably the most expensive fluid in the world !!!

You might be lucky if you find a Banks's pub. They tend to be cheapest.
