New London Pub
« on: Oct 4 - 2011 »
Looks like Sam Smith Southern are applying for permision to demolition a building in London to build a new four storey building as a pub. So SSOB does have some buildings down there that are awaiting for the SSOB makeover. Shall have to wait and see what happens to it.

Looks like the first Sam's pub in the Camden area.

It's on page 6 of the document. May be a southern member could check it out for us

Having a deeper dig into thr Camden planning portal, I found the application was refused

http://planningonline.camden.gov.uk/MULTIWAM/doc/Decision%20Notice-2880967.pdf?extension=.pdf&id=2880967&location=VOLUME3&contentType=application/pdf&pageCount=1

As this has been going on since at least 2005 and Camden have continually refused planning permission. This last refusal was because they didn't think Tadcaster Limestone (wonder who that was coming from?!) would be in keeping with the character of the area and the brick sample submitted was wrong.  The plans for the pub are stunning...

Frankly I wish the company the best of luck with this.

This is the proposed site, next to Kentish Town Lock, including the building next to the bridge...

This building is just staggering!  It will cost an absolute bomb if built.  I hope that they do get planning permission without destroying any historic buildings (the on on the photo seems okay) and do eventually meet the planning permission criteria - Tadcaster Magnesian Limestone in London, come on!

On the drawings you can make out "Samuel Smith's" on the name board (is this an indication that pub branding is returning?  ;D).  If you zoom in, then you can see the name of the pub: THE LOCK GATES.

On closer inspection, the building is not that special: Google Street View

And on further inspection, this building, which is an accountant's, is staying.

Why not? The Tower of London is built from French limestone.

Perhaps he is changing his name to Humphrey the Conqourer;D

So it is. The plan of the area I saw on part of one of the many applications seemed to encompass that building as part of the overall development, but with hindsight I don't suppose he owns that.  There are applications by SS for this piece of land going back to 1991!

I envisage one day sat in a pub on this plot of land that looks very similar to what is in the plans drinking a pint of Old Brewery Bitter in a Samuel Smith's pub (but without the Samuel Smith's branding on the outside).  I wonder why the branding is shown?  Is that just in case he wants to put it back at a future date and therefore planning permission will already have been granted for it?

HS will be proper pleased for the recommendation to drink British Beer in an Independant British Pub  ;)

Thinks back, Didn't Gordon Ramsey have a Gastro Pub in London called the Lock Gates using boil in the bag methods  perhaps he may be recruited to to do the catering on second thoughts he is a Jock  ;)

I think the branding is shown because the architect was just doing a thorough job, plus they seem to go back to at least 2005 despite the submission date.

Here is a drawing from 1985 (!) that shows a very different pub, called 'The Lock' http://planningonline.camden.gov.uk/MULTIWAM/doc/Drawing-2295791.pdf?extension=.pdf&id=2295791&location=DTCamden080808&contentType=application/pdf&pageCount=1

It could be a long drawn out fight against the Council and other parties, as to wether a Sam's pub will every be built on this piece of land. I think the architects are just doing a thorough job with the name incorporated on the building. But i think this shows us that SSOB Southern must own other pieces of land in London, which have the potential to be used as pubs. May be there is a long term plan after all.

They already have planning permission so it's a done deal as long as Sams meet the two conditions, which are stone cladding and brickwork that meet the criteria of the local conservation zone. Mind, got to admire Hump for trying to use his own Yorkshire stone!
