Auf Wiedersehen Pet
« on: Oct 6 - 2011 »
Series 2 episodes 3-7 of Auf Wiedersehen pet 'the lads' drink in a pub
called the Barley Mow that appears to be a Sam Smiths pub. Cant find
it in the pub list so does anyone know if the Barley Mow is still SS or
does it qualify for the ex pub list? Think the series was filmed around
1985-86 and the location was supposed to be Derbyshire.

"Here is the country cross road that we watched Wayne drive across to get to the Cross Keys, and further below is the building that served as the Cross Keys.  This is not a pub or hotel at all. This is the entrance to a private estate. The Denton estate, in Denton. Denton is close to Redmile, home of the Windmill (Barley Mow) Inn."

Hi there, and thank you for your post.  The Windmill appears to be a free house.  What did you spot to make you think it had a Samuel Smith's connection?

This is the Google Street View of The Windmill.

Cheers,

All the trappings of a SS pub, OBB  hand pumps, Alpine on tap, beer mats, SS towels. If you go on You Tube and type in Auf Weidersehen Pet 'no sex please were brickies' you should see the bar.
Also im sure they showed a SS sign outside the pub.

Here's the YouTube video:

You can see the Samuel Smith's beer towels at 1:30 in.  It might be that the inside of the "pub" is in fact a TV studio and that Samuel Smith's Brewery kitted it out for them for the publicity...possibly something the Brewery was not too shy about in the mid-1980s.

If you go to about 2:40 then you can see the Alpine man-in-a-box and a bit later Pat Bomber Roach is playing with a Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Bitter beer mat in a way that if I was synical and didn't know better would suggest is a bit of product placement.  What is portrayed is definitely a Samuel Smith's pub.  Well spotted blue stanley.

Possibly a few years ago when Humphrey was not in complete control of the brewery, that they allowed film companies to film inside the pubs. I only recall lately that a Dr Who episode The Run Away Bride was filmed in a Sam's pub.

Inspectro Morse liked Samuel Smiths Bitter from what i remember

The scene inside the 'pub' is a studio set. I've worked on few over the years and the clues are all there. The lighting is too perfect, everything's too neat, the windows are opaque with studio lights providing unnaturally even and unvarying light shining in, nothing goes past the windows, the camera is on a rail and passes 'through' the bar at one point, and if you look carefully there's the odd bit of movement from the 'walls'.

Nice bit of product placement though.

Ah, I did not know that sorry. I did speak to the manager though and he did say some of the scenes were shot inside.

Strong Pale Ale for Morse.

However just this weekend, watching some repeats of 'Touch of Frost'.

In the fictitious town of 'Denton' is a Sam Smith house called the 'Red Lion' and 'Frosty' enjoys a jar or two.  8)

Sorry centurion thought that they may have changed the name of the pub.  :P

Just realised i typed the name in capitals, i am told that is like shouting in these modern times, sorry.

The name 'Red Lion' and Samuel Smith with rose can clearly be seen, etched in to the windows of the pub. They are best seen in the episode about the DENTON football club. Along with ashtrays beer mats etc.

It seems Sams got away with product placement long before Nationwide and there cash machine in Corrie.
