Regional Price Differene in Beer
« on: Oct 7 - 2011 »
Interesting article about the regional price of beer in the north compared with the beer in the north. In London they have obviously not found a Sam Smith's pub.

Also mentions the new lower tax on the lower ABV beers sold now

Old Brewery Bitter is about ?1.63 in Widow Cullen's Well and ?2.11 in London pubs.  This difference is far greater, being about a third more expensive in London.  This in itself isn't a problem, as you have transport costs to add.

There's also Holts who have 127 pubs in Greater Manchester whose beer is much cheaper than the norm, although not as cheap as Sams.

A pint of bitter is just over ?2.

Near me outside of Sam's we have a small pub chain (used to part of spirit, sold off to them) that sells bitter for just over ?2 a pint. Weatherspoons is the next sort of cheap option

From recent experience the days of Wetherspoons being cheap are rapidly ending. Most only have one beer on offer on now. I was in one a couple of weeks ago that was anything but cheap!

As you say Wetherspoons are not as cheap as they used to be for bitter, other pubs in my area sell similar real ales and are about the same price. With so many Sams pubs in my area it's a hard choice some weekends.

Yes, I agree.  The difference in price between Wetherspoon and elsewhere is reducing, although it is generally still cheaper than most.  The last time I went back to Lancashire (about a year ago) I noticed quite a few pubs advertising Tetley at ?1.72 and I think Carling at T?1.92.  This is far cheaper than Wetherspoon.  There are many other pubs and pub chains with cheaper beer...has anyone come across the "Lamb & Flag" chain yet (part of Mitchells and Butler, formerly Bass)?

Never heard of them and there's no mention of them on the M&B website?

They converted an "Bar LN2" theme bar in Lincoln to a (theme) "pub".  They sell real ale at reasonable prices.  They are a slightly more up-market version of JD Wetherspoon.  The one in Lincoln was one of the first to open as an experiment.

There is also a reasonably new chain in the north called Amber Taverns.  They are cheaper than Wetherspoons but not quite as cheap as Sams, although, like Spoons, they generally have one real ale that is very cheap.

I've heard of these: (http://www.ambertaverns.co.uk). They have 65 pubs, which is about the same as what Bateman's have.  They seem to be selling the Scottish & Newcastle range, so probably have a deal with them.
