Price rises - more to come!
« on: Nov 2 - 2011 »
The price of OBB went up in central London pubs today from ?2.11 to ?2.44 - a massive 17% hike!

Rumour has it that there may be more price increases in December.  Without the price differential, I can't see that Sam Smiths pubs will be that attractive in the future (OK, they're not that attractive now...)

The prices went up by quite a bit a while ago, so surprised about yet anotehr increase. Quite a few pubs have only jsut got the new price lists for the lower ABV Alpine and milds. Also might be just London as the overheads are obviously much more expensive, than the rest of the country. Shall have to wait and see. Surely the other London pubs are over the ?4 mark for a pint by now, so by comparison it's still pretty cheap.

Sorry - got that wrong - should be ?2.47.

You can pay what you like for beer in London, but most places in the centre are around ?3.50 a pint and less popular areas under ?3.  The closer Sam's get to ?3.00 the more people will vote with their feet!

Hi there, and thank you for your first post.

I am surprised that the price of a pint has gone up so much (33p) in London, based on previous Brewery pricing policy.  This, if true, would mark a major change in Brewery policy.

As for Samuel Smith's being attractive, well, I generally have to disagree.  Widow Cullen's Well in Lincoln is brillant and packed at weekends.  Many other pubs across the country, including in London are busy, well maintained and attractive.  I am not sure what pub or pubs exactly you are referring to.

Yes it would be a big shift in brewery policy that the pints have gone up by so much. Last time the bitter went up by 6p. Many of my local Sam's are still very busy compared with many other pubs in the villages and towns. Must say on my trips to London, i have not found a pub selling beer at the ?2 mark. Can't have looked hard enough

I found one pub in Soho just down from Samuel Smith's Red Lion selling a pint of bitter for ?2.20.  This was about April this year and DarkieGirl and I were quite surprised.

Yes, we were taken aback at the price when we saw it advertised outside...and we will also be in London later this month!

One of my "bezzie pals" went to London recently to watch the NFL (Last Week). he advised that the average cost for the OBB was @ ?2.10. Discuss. I was under the impression from my sources that SS hadnt increased the price of its products by much more than the increase in tax in the last 10 years

I was in London for a few days in August. I recall Chandos being ?2.17 for OBB. The other three I called into were either the same or ?2.11

That was then and this is now.  The Taddy Lager is now ?2.78, Pure Brew/Stout/Cider are ?3.70 and most bottled beers are ?4.75.  For ?3.70 I can drink a pint of Guinness in a better pub and watch any sport available at the same time.  No change in the price of wines/spirits/soft drinks, but who in his right mind wants to pay the best part of ?18 for a bottle of supermarket-quality wine?

The reason given by the brewery is the cost of malting barley and transport to London.  I'm voting with my feet.

My local, near Tad, has been told of unspecified price increases about to be announced.
Will it be the usual pennies - or more like the London increase?
Thus prompting the local cry of:

"How much!"

This is a major break from company policy of not increasing beer prices apart from duty increase.  Are the coffers low at Taddy Towers? Is the company accountant sounding the death-knell?  Does anyone have a price list that they can post or get someone else to post?  What changes will happen next?

Memo came this morning to my local and the prices are increasing OBB 8p, taddy lager 9p, stout 10p and Pure Brew 13p. Sorry forgot the other figures. Indeed a change in company policy, may be Taddy towers are running short of money.
