Sam's pub selling John Smith's beer!
« on: Nov 4 - 2011 »
Been told this week that a Sam Smith's pub (I do know which one but will not post the name on here yet) ran out of OBB and could not get any more until the next delivery so he went out and bought 2 barrels of John Smith's to tide him over the 2/3 days before the dray came.

Now some might not believe it's true, but I do think the two people who told me was telling the truth.

This did happen 4 years ago and I believe the manager as now left the company.

Seems odd that a manager for a SS pub, rang the John Smith's brewery to buy a couple of barrels. Becasue is Sam Smiths going to pay John Smiths for the beer, i would not have thought so. So i would edge on the side of caution with this one.

I "read" it that the manager went to a wholesalers and paid for it himself and sold it and pocketed the money. But maybe best If I don't name the pub concerned.

Now you have said that you had better not reveal which pub it is. Not best practice pocketing the money and probably doing a runner.

It's a good story, but I'd be sceptical about this one for two reasons : firstly - Samuel Smiths barrels and John Smiths barrels use different fittings to attach the barrels to the pipes for dispensing the beer ; would the manager really go to the trouble of changing the fittings on the end of the pipes for the sake of a couple of days before a delivery ? Secondly, did the manager think that his regulars wouldn't know the difference between keg John Smiths and SS keg OBB ? The biggest clue - keg OBB tastes of something, John Smiths doesn't !

Humphrey or SSOB own alot of land and buildings around the John Smith's brewery. Not sure whether the John Smiths brewery still use the well at the back of the Samuel Smith's Old Brewery or not.

When in the training centre years ago we were told by Mike Walker (good guy) that Johns paid for there usage of the water and paid rent for the land they were on as it is owned by Sams. Also one day Hump was walking thro Johns when a security guy ordered him out of the premises one phone call from Hump and he was sacked.
We were told this on training.

Have been told that John Smith's paid for the use of the well. But was not aware that John Smith's paid rent for the land that the brewery was built on. Seems a strange arangement that SSOB has control of all the land on that side of Tadcaster. Didn't think Humphrey had that much power with the John Smith's brewery, or was this many years ago. Pretty harsh for the security guy, as probably was unaware who Humphrey was.

Old wives tale methinks:  Even if he does own the land it gives him no right to trespass on the premises and if a guard was sacked then whoever owned John Smiths at the time would more than likely pay attention to employment law.

I'm inclined to agree.

Inclined to agree with you. The two brewery's must have been separate entity after William Smith;s death. So would not have thought that Humphrey had any influence over the John Smith's brewery. As you say, John Smith's probably pay attention to employment law.

If you lease or rent premises, the property owner or lessor has no right of entry except by arrangements defined in the lease but in the case of a land lease as is suspected in this case no right of entry at all.  You can't just go wandering in!
