Perfect pub
« on: Nov 23 - 2011 »
This article was on the wireless this morning, featuring George Orwell's "Moon Under the Water", which is what JD Wetherspoon are meant to base their pubs on.  They also have a number of pubs with that name including one in Wigan, with an obvious Orwell connection:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9645000/9645899.stm

The association between Waterspoon's and Orwell name came about in 1986, probably at a time when it was more appropriate.  My "local" is far from the essay, resembling a vast and vacuous cavern with much the same atmosphere.

Samuel Smith's pubs are more akin to the essay, in my opinion.

I agree that SSOB pubs are more akin to the essay than Wetherspoons. Believe that Humphrey sent out the essay a few years ago to all the managers, shall see if i can get hold of the extract unless i can find it online.

This thread does make me chuckle. What I am about to say is not meant as a criticism, just an observation followed by a suggestion. Regular members will be aware that on occasion we have a habit of going round in circles - in effect the forum is so successful in pooling information and grown so large, we can't find information easily from earlier posts and threads. I suspect a volunteer or volunteers needs to step forward to weed out some of the 'chaff' so that we can more easily find the wheat. It would also be great - especially for new members - if there were a few basic facts pages of the 'story so far' sort of thing.

Meanwhile I'll carry on searching for the last time we chatted about the famous ideal pub immortalised by the article in the London Evening Standard I think, and that formed the basis for Humphrey's memo!

When I started this topic I was aware that I'd mentioned the Orwell essay before, but unfortunately couldn't remember where.  bigjim, are you suggesting perhaps an index?

An index might well be useful, but might be quite abit of work to sort it out. Or maybe a newbie section with the basic information about the brewery and links to common questions or faq.
