Must admit I don't like naming the pub, just in case.

I think it means they have 3 different lagers under ?5: pure brewed, alpine and Taddy. Not that you can get 3 pints for a fiver. Bit deceiving though I'm surprised they don't get complaints!

2.8% alpine would be 3 pints for under a fiver

Yes bubble is right, 3 pints of Alpine is under ?5 pints.  Also the notice says "From under ?5"  I think it's done to pull the punters in on the run up to Xmas.  If it works then good for them.

I could easily refuse if it was Carling, Fosters or any other foreign lager of that kind.  However, I know it's Samuel Smith's!

Welcome to the forum shandy.

I can't see any harm in trying to get more people in.  I would say that the notice is aimed at the younger drinker (under 60)

Heard on the grapevine a few weeks ago that Humphrey what's his Northern pubs to be more like his London ones.  Out with the oldie's and in with the  yuppie's or whatever you what to call them.  I think that is why he's going to try and turn the Shoulder of Mutton in Bradford into a eating place in the hope us oldies will find somewhere else to drink.

Only time will tell if he's right or wrong.

A publican needs to be very careful with "promotions" and drinks "offers" in this day and age.  I know this isn't an offer nor a promotion, as it is a standard price, but still.

Yes but managers have to use the only tools they have.  The quality and price of Sam Smith's products.  These kind of signs (yes rare for SS pubs) can be seen down most high streets all the time.

As the tools available to managers of the SSOB empire are limited and non existence. I have seen similar signs outside other SS pubs, but never put them on here for obvious reasons. Many managers are hoping for a busy xmas and new year period and good luck pulling in more customers. I do think that some SSOB pubs are trying to hard to attract the young and other people that are attracted by the low price of the beer.

Don't understand how Humphrey can try and use the same formula for his London flagship pubs and the northern ones. Different types of people and different needs. If indeed the Shoulder at Bradford is getting a refurbishment in the new year, then i don't see how it is going to do food as well. It's busy enough at the best of times and limited staff hours. Food as well, how is that going to happen  :P
