Hypothetical question

Hypothetical question regarding stock management.

Is it ethical or good business for a manager to shutdown a mix of product pumps stating no stock in the hope of clearing surplus stock of another product from their cellar?

Hi winky and its great to see you've made a post at last. :)

Speaking as a customer I would say no it's not. But as a customer I don't have a pressure that some of the managers must be working under. Saying that I'm not saying it's right.

Thankyou for not naming the pub concerned.

ian.

There is a town nearby us that has a pub which occassionaly has a "quids in" night i.e. one pound to go in and a pound a drink.;  BUT the pound drinks are not the most popular ones.  Suppose that is also a way of clearing stock. ::) ::)

It is certainly not unheard of in the trade.

I suppose it's just bad practice and usually means too much of one particular product's been ordered and has to be sold before it goes off  but that would usually only affect cask beers. Keg beer has a long shelf life, despite the best before dates. I can't remember the last time I found out it had been going on and I don't suppose managers enjoy doing it.

As a customer it is bad management not to have a product available, but often it is either bad stock planning or they are just trying to get rid of a particular product. I have seen this before at a SS pub. Other managers have tried to sell the Wheat beer and Pure Brew at a discount as it was running out of date.

I do know another non SS pub that sells bitter at a pound a pint on occasions and only to get rid of it. As other pubs in the area are Weatherspoons and SS. Not sure this is good, as it still states outside that it's 2.45 a pint.

I think this way is best, but you can always turn your computer upsidedown, problem solved mate.   :P After a few Taddies down at your local Sams it won't make much difference, will it.

OBB cask is only a couple of weeks or so shelf life. Makes the xmas ordering a guess really - so I'm told. This causes a tendency to under order rather than over order.

I know a few managers now that are struggling with the xmas ordering and might well run out of certain products. Xmas ordering is always tricky, and probably trickier this year as it falls on the weekend. So people have more choice when to drink.

The OBB probably only good for a week at most when tapped. Think the keg stuff has a 50 odd day shelf life.

Sams OBB will last 12 days (so the brewery tells us) when an aspirator is used and most of Sams use an aspirator, this puts a tiny amount of gas in in the barrel when being pulled. After saying that its best shifted sooner than later
