Food Sales Slow In January
« on: Feb 8 - 2012 »
Heard a while ago that food sales at some of the SS pubs that normally do well on food sales didn't do well in the first month of the year. Apparently Linda Stuart phoned around 10 up to ask why they not sold any food for 10 days, and this was for about 10-15 SS pubs. Does she not know that there is a recession on and the first month of the year is probably always going to be slow.

Probably under the pressure of Humphrey to see why his pubs are not taking enough money.

My local Samuel Smith's pub stopped selling food about six months ago, for no particular reason.  It always seemed reasonably buy on the food side and has no reason not to be considering its location.

My local stopped doing food over 2 years ago now, because the manager didn't really push it after they lost the franchise. It's fairly competatively priced, but becasue it has the stigma of been the airline food, nobody really gives it go. Some locations you would think, would help them sell the food.

The one and only meal I had was okay - just okay.  No better or worse than the factory fodder you get in JD Wetherspoon's, although more expensive (but at least it was hot).

I have tried quite a few things off the menu over the last 2 years or so. Its ok but not great. Slightly better than JD's, but not much in it.

Sunday dinners are a different kettle of fish and are good. With fresh veg and homemade gravy. Used to frozen veg in the past.

Linda does as she is told and is very much like Humphrey u would have to be to work with the stubborn old mule tho! food if cooked properly and a little help in butter in mash and use anything but Humphrey's gravy mix the food is not bad at all i have to admit but Humphrey's choice is the only way so you all see how plain he is and often tucks into the various pies on offer at different pubs when he is out terrorising his staff lol! i am reliable informed!

Oh yes even the mighty Humphrey has to eat i have been in two different pubs and seen him tucking in to ping pie, ping mash and frozen veg with SAM smiths lovely extra stout gravy, and he can tell if they have helped the food along with butter/salt pepper etc which doesn't go down very well due to the purity statement which accompanies the Sarah brownridge menu. Hes a real dynamo really :P honest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so even on top of all the other ludicrous reasons for having a go at staff/management one more is:
"the food isn't bland enough"

That's right because Humphrey could be sued if someone became ill and then it was proved it was because of what some one added to the product during the ping process so he does make regular checks as to wether people are doing this. I believe one of his flag ship pubs in a busy town centre were caught doing such practise and they felt the lash of humphs tongue and a written warning  :P

As someone who has a very restricted diet, including NO egg and NO dairy products, I would be very very annoyed if someone added something to a meal against its menu description.

I could very well become ill as a consequence.  For this one, I am in support of Humphrey Smith preventing any doctoring of food products beyong their pre-prepared state.

thanks for proving the point darkie boy i agree and thought its was time to maybe give HS a bit of support maybe that will win him round!!!!! wishful thinking i know. The PURITY STATEMENT THAT IS PROVIDED WITH THE MENU IS SURROUNDED BY STRICT GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR THAT VERY REASON. but it doesn't make the food any more salable if you get my drift but for health and safteys sake and customers well being it has to be upheld.

i would have to agree as well it makes sense for that very reason... for allergies and people's various intolerances so on, which these days are a many and varied minefield.
i'm just thankful i can eat more or less whatever i like, with only a minor reaction to something every now and again. it's easy to forget these things when you don't have to pay much attention to them for yourself.

besides you can always add salt & pepper if you want to :-)

i've not yet been able to verify this but i did hear he introduced this food change after somebody was ill from something and took it further (court or something?) and rather than address the pub in question he just made a global change to his menus.
again i must state that i don't know the truth of this, as far as i'm concerned everything is just a rumour until it's verified.

Things like butter can be added by the diner at the table to the quantity they choose - there is no reason for the "chef" (aka microwave operator - I might be being a little disingenuous) should add this product.  One reason I like Samuel Smith's Brewery is their very explicit labelling of products.  They are the only Brewery of any scale that I know that labels their draught beers as being vegan.  Two small Breweries also do, these being Marble (from Manchester) and Springhead, from Nottinghamshire.

Three cheers to Samuel Smith's Brewery for clear labelling!

DB.

PS Webmaster, can we have an icon of a beer glass/tankard as well as just smiley faces?  In fact, anything else beer and brewery related would be good too.
