I've just returned to my home town of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire, after two months overseas on business, and was very saddened to hear that my local pub's Landlady is leaving!!!

The pub known as 'Nellies' (White Horse Inn) has been my hostelry of choice in my home town for a number of years.

The Landlady Anna (I don't think she uses a second name) has been running the place for about six or seven years. According to my friend who knows her better than I, she has been with the Samuel Smiths Brewery for some 29 years!!!

I know from visiting that she has always put a lot of effort in, making the place her own, and I would imagine a lot at her own expense. I also know from an earlier conversation (late last year I think) that she was quite happy to stay running Nellies until her retirement.

So why is she leaving? I asked my friend and he told me this:

"She has been offered a job at a pub in Lincoln called the Strugglers Inn. She would not have taken up the offer but for a couple of reasons. The change in brewery policy towards music, entertainment, and food. The second reason being the uncertainty of future job security in light of recent company dismissals."

Now all of this makes perfect sense. A few years back, the world famous gas-lit Nellies had a variety of music and entertainment. This included a Jazz evening, folk club, and a pub pianist and much more. Anna had also secured a wedding license for the upstairs function room, which seemed very popular. The younger generation seemed to enjoy the modern juke box music in the adjoining pool room.

All of this now sadly gone. Beverley is world renowned for it's roots in medieval music and minstrels which is depicted in reliefs at our local Minster and St Marys Church. So it seems somewhat ironic that despite the enduring traditions of music in the town, in all cultures of life, the Smiths Brewery want it banned. And so went the weddings too. I was told that even singing happy birthday at any Smiths Brewery owned venue, would warrant a removal from the premises. So no chance at all then of singing Roll Out The Barrel!!!

Anna used to provide a beautiful range of meals and snacks, which I always looked forward to on my return home from overseas business. I was very disappointed to see all of the previous menu options replaced with a brewery-wide standard menu. I have tried two separate meals, and I won't be eating any more of them. I'm afraid they are rather bland and the type of food I prefer is no longer catered for.

Regrettably, my past loyalties to Nellies at lunchtime has now lapsed. I will now be dining elsewhere.

Whilst I still visit Nellies in the evening for the time being, I fear this too may soon become a thing of the past. I am led to believe (and even more so after visiting this site) that things are going to get much worse.

On a number of occasions, I've noticed a build up of used glasses around Nellies which is very unwelcoming. And the poor staff and Anna seem to struggle at some times to keep on top of things, due to staff shortages. I have been told by my friend in the know, that it is due to the brewery reducing the number of allocated staffing hours per week. In which case, it would appear that the Smiths Brewery is further orchestrating it's increasing unpopularity.

Sooner or later it is going to have insufficient clientele to viably remain in business.

Whilst the brewery may own freehold 'Nellies', in the bigger scheme of things, they are only the caretakers of this unique and highly popular, listed building. And whilst I would compliment them on appearing to adequately and sympathetically retain the fabric and aesthetic of the place, they are eroding the buildings heart, namely its customers. The beast is dying!!!

It will be very sad to see Anna go. Loyal and experienced managers must be hard to replace. And I should know from my own company's experience. We place a lot of value on our commercially effective personal. Something which any business should appreciate.

After my secretary found this website, and reading much of it's content, it looks like many are deciding to abandon ship before the ship sinks, or the Captain pushes them overboard into icy waters!!!

Anna's act will be a hard one to follow. And in the climate of the current regime, it is looking as if she may be replaced with less experience personnel who may possibly be under a great deal of pressure, for unfair recompense. And that I could imagine mean even more cluttered tables with unwashed glasses, and a return of the nastier element of people previously banned. And because of it's many rooms and cubbyholes, without sufficient staff to manage, I can see Nellies becoming a den for drugs and violence.

Maybe it's time for my friends and I who have enjoyed a pleasant cruise before the onset of this brewing storm - to man the life boats!!!

Another very sad story from the growing list of disasters, A very admirable letter Sir, As you are probably aware most of the contributors on this site are either loyal but very pissed off customers, ex managers and staff, or present managers.
One thing we ALL have in common is the love for Sams pubs and their products, I myself have frequented many of their pubs for some 38 years now and had the misfortune to work for them.

I have often heard of "Nellies" and the gas lamps and would hope one day soon to come on over and have a look, I have a great love of old characteristic pubs as I am sure many of us do, and by the way Sams own very many like that.
I guess I had better make it sooner rather than later by the sound of it, before Sams rip the heart out of another community pub....very sad indeed, who knows what they are capable of?

29 years is a bloody long time in anyones life to dedicate to one job, particularly in one pub, the poor poor lady, if she does eventually have to give it up I am sure she will be devastated, it will be similar to losing a close friend.

Humphrey if you DO have access to this site as we are led to believe and are able to read this, then you should hang your head in shame my friend, you are wrecking peoples lives, wrecking community meeting places, wrecking your ancestors business empire....it is not yours to wreck, you are only the current encumbent.

There are well over 200 people looking at and using this site on a regular basis, its popularity is growing daily, it is not going to go away despite your alleged previous efforts....ARE WE ALL WRONG!!!  and you right?

Somehow I dont think so.

im a nellies regular of many years and love the pub  ;)

but very unhappy about the ways of the brewery who are ruining the pub with no music and things  :(

anna was originally working for sams in lincolnshire before coming to nellies about 6 or seven years ago as minsterman says. and she has put a lot of effort in but cant do anything now that the brewer are destroying things. but i agree the place is kept in good nick  8)

all of us regulars are dreading anna going. although she can be a bit strict sometimes its all for the good of the pub and everyone  ;)

if the bad crowd come back in when shes gone then me and at least 8 others will leave for good  :'(

i asked anna who was taking over and she said that she didnt know and that she didnt think the job was advertised yet which is a bit odd  ::)

so does anyone know whats happening and who are we getting and is it just couples now? thanx  ???

I heard a story a week or two ago that Humphrey has actually been seen knocking on doors (dont know where) asking people if they would like to run a pub for him, sounds preposterous I know but the person telling me assured me it was true.
Anyone heard similar?

Similar story here Maddog... back end of last year.. he visited some friends of mine who were looking for a pub...knocked on their door,  didn't introduce himself, just said he worked for the brewery. My pals said it was a strange meeting and that he had some wierd social skills, always looking to the door and made a hasty exit for no apparent reason.  They rang me and asked if I could describe him, cos' they were non the wiser as to who he was when he left.....No surprise that they didn't take it any further.

In London they have a website www.workinapub.co.uk/, where managers can ring the office if they want an ad for staff put up.  They also sometimes advertise for managers in the evening standard, but that is not very successful,I have been told

Ahh, the London pubs, that reminds me of something I wanted to ask:-

Are the managers of the London area Sams pubs experiencing the same diificult regime?
And something else that has often been on mind is this:-
If Sams own and run hundreds of pubs (between 300-500 ive heard bandied around) * does anyone know just how many they do have countrywide? Yes I know there is a list on this site but I know of at least a dozen that are not on the list, and thats only me.

Anyway if they own hundreds, how does that one (not that big) brewery in Taddy, service all those pubs on a weekly basis, bearing in mind they also supply many working mens clubs too and do export quite a bit, particularly to the States.

Maybe I'm reading that all wrong but it takes some believing that one plant supplies all of that, and on weekly deliveries.

Any views?

Yes I know there is a list on this site but I know of at least a dozen that are not on the list, and thats only me.

I hope to update the list with a number of additional venues recently sent to me, as soon as I've modified the site software so that the posts don't appear in the recent posts list or news. :)

Interest question regarding the production and distribution. Maybe they employ the services of Santa Clause  ;D

Sorry Admin, if it sounded like I was having a go about the missing pubs, it certainly wasn't meant to sound like that, I was merely pointing out that you have around 180 listed, so there must be a few hundred more to go, indeed does anyone know how many they do have?
The supply and distribution query is certainly interesting though, its something ive thought about for a couple of years now.

Hey - no problemo :)

I know you weren't having a go. I do agree with you, it would be nice to have the entire list - which I think would be a bit of a first. :)
