the open hours  issue over new year is not as described before, the company have so called grand father rights which allow them to open longer hours on new years eve without asking permission from licencing depts concerned so technicaley there is no set closing time

That is not true. Since the changes in the licensing laws a few years ago, any licensed premise can open for 24 hours over the New Year. From my research it seems Humphrey has forbade the application for an occasional license which would allow the pub to open late on , say, Christmas Eve, which as it stands means that Sams pubs on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and any other day over Christmas must legally call time at 11pm or 10.30pm on a Sunday. As I've said, New Years Eve is now an automatic exemption for everyone and you can legally open your doors at 11am New Years Eve and not shut them until 11pm on New Years Day. That is if you are completely mad and overdosed on Pro plus tablets to keep you and your customers going. The only reason why a Sams pub cant open late on New Years Eve is if the manager has been so instructed by Humphrey, which you would have thought would be an insane instruction........in which case I wait with baited breath for the next unmissable pronouncement from Tadcaster Towers.

Mind you, it would be a massive saving on staff hours if he did.........
Hope I'm not tempting fate, I've seen the New Year in with family and friends at my local for the best part of 20 years and though it is not quite the same without the music, which really did add to the atmosphere, giving rise to good natured sing songs and even dancing when the ale had taken full effect (ay me , those were the days), it is still the only place I want to ring in the New Year (singing Auld Lang syne isnt banned yet is it?). Actually there will be one more thing different this year, the Managers used to put on a bit of a supper when they were still doing the food last year, so I suppose that will all have gone now. Unless we order frozen pie.
Happy New Year Mr Smith. Please.

Lol, just realised some more posts have gone on before my last reply. I suppose mine was a more long winded response!!
And yes Buster you are right, I must be mental. Its just tradition and an affinity for the old place and its customers that keeps me going back. Its like watching a much loved relative slowing deteriorating and you feel the need that to be there for them, in the neverending hope that there might just be a sudden recovery. Perhaps one day soon............ was that a pig flying by?

I live in hope. Mr Smith. Please!!!!!!!!

maybe the reason that Humpty Numpty does not want extended hours over the holiday period is to remind us all that Christmas is not about enjoying onesself, letting your hair down after a hard years graft, rather it is a celebration of the birth of our Saviour. As a god-fearing man and regular churchgoer he must feel duty bound to engender the true spirit of Christmas throughout his estate, no doubt he will be soreading good will and cheer to all regardless of wealth, race, colour or creed.

I will try and integrate another spell-check into the system I had to remove the original one, as it became a big vulnerability, when we was undergoing the website attacks.

In my earlier post regarding this topic I alluded (with ironic intent) to Humphrey's supposed christianity, now I'm not a religious man by any stretch of the imagination but nor would I castigate anyone for their beliefs. What I cannot abide however, is people who purport to be devout, pious christians but fly in the face of all the teachings of their church. Perhaps certain citizens should pay more attention to scripture, if I might suggest a "for instance"
they could start with:
        THERE ARE SIX THINGS THE LORD HATES,SEVEN THAT ARE AN ABOMINATION TO HIM;
HAUGHTY EYES, A LYING TONGUE, HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD.
A HEART THAT DEVISES WICKED SCHEMES, FEET THAT ARE QUICK TO RUSH TO EVIL.
A FALSE WITNESS WHO POURS OUT LIES, AND A MAN WHO STIRS UP DISSENT AMONG BROTHERS.

                     Proverbs 6  16-18

Quite apt I think considering the guy who wrote it didn't even work for Sams.

New Year opening times covered by act of parliment 2000 by good old Tony Blair, for the milleniumumumum. No need to apply, read your premisis license. :-*

Greetings everyone. I keep reading posts regarding Festivity opening hours. The discussion still goes on regarding the licensing law / additional hours / premises licenses hours etc.
Lets get something straight, you are all forgetting one thing, Mr. Humph is the law (and above it).
We operate within his company selling his liquor, so unless you want the sack you will close at 11pm and you will not extend a hand to your customers by having a ?lock in?.
Why no lock in, who is to know? I hear you ask, quite simply everyone will know if one of your people posts on this site thinking they are doing you a good turn. We have already seen licensees being humiliated on here by customers.
None of us agree with what?s happening, but our hands are tied good and proper.
Close at 11pm as directed, tidy up, get your coats on and enjoy the moment at your competitors pub, just as you do for football / cricket / rugby etc. If Humph doesn?t want the money then take it elsewhere and boost their coffers.
Glad tidings to you all, goodwill towards all men except Humph & FOB.

Here's some useful sign language - especially if your pub gets an un-festive visit from Humphs or FOB..

And for the more advanced approach - simply spell it out..

Or if you are asked to do something you don't agree with - just plead ignorant..

And finally, a 'must buy' for all Sam's customers - yes, it's not too late to join in with the festivities at your local Sam's pub!...
