Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

I went to The Royal George around about February this year.  It's a locals' pub in an housing estate (the tower block opposite had recently been on fire).  the interior was in need of some improvement, but generally I liked what I saw.  Several rooms with various adornments, including a very large model of a boat.  No cask ale was available, but the quality of the drink that I had was fine.  Not obviously serving food.

However, I wasn't overly impressed by the barmaid, who had to be told that she had someone waiting to be served even though she had looked at us.  She could have just had an off day, so I won't cast judgement (much).

PS Apologies for the dark photo, but the weather was not too sparkling and it was taken on a phone's camera.  No inside photos were taken as it would have been blatantly obvious!

Looks like another lovely old building, but one that has been neglected over the years. Such a pity about the policy of this company spending millions on some and nothing on others. I have now given up telling staff that customers are waiting in some pubs, as you just get shouted at or told to be quiet. Staff training seems to have slipped over the last few years.

My first impression of the building was that it looked like a typical London pub - like the Queen Vic in that telly programme.  The barmaid had no one else to serve and she must have noticed us walk in - the eight or so blokes at the bar did, as they all turned to look when I walked through the door!

The interior was passable, but not for much longer.  Fifty grand would easily bring this pub back into shape - it may be that the Brewery is not too impressed with the area around it, as it is council estate tower blocks and the like, but then that might imply that the Brewery is prejudiced!

Have been calling in here occasionally over a number of years, and at the moment a fairly new manager seems to be making a real effort and a real difference. No problems with service, atmosphere improved, and busier than I am used to seeing it.

Full range of beers including dark mild (rare for London) and Yorkshire (possibly a light mild?). OBB currently ?2.22 and the dark mild ?1.85. The pub is being re-decorated and is due to be completed next week.

I am a bit puzzled by the description of it as a ''council estate pub'', as that area does not fit my idea of a council estate. True there are a few old style tenement blocks down Tanners Hill and a tower block, but the other way is a 2 minute walk to the busy Lewisham Way and is mainly private property. Just saying like.

"Yorkshire" is a light mild if I remember correctly.

The phrase I used was "council estate tower blocks" rather than "council estate.  I've attached an image of one of them, which had been on fire.
