Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

Nice bar area; unusual to see bar skittle table.  Traditional pub with the untraditional feature of "Bens Thai Restaurant" upstairs.  Quite near to Lords Cricket ground; pint and half of Alpine was ?3.41.

Ian, did you try the Thai restaurant upstairs?  I didn't when I went in here.  The restaurant is a bit of an anomaly for Samuel Smith's as it is contracted out/leased out.

This pub is another Samuel Smith's with a bar billiards table.  Not tried it myself, but looks interesting with its mushrooms!

Seems strange that Humphrey actually rents out the upstairs of one of his pubs. But i suppose its becasue its London and he can charge large amounts of money for the space. Also i thought this is one of the offices for Samuel Smiths Southern.

Heard on the grapevine that it's going to get a big refurb and then a name change.

I did not think that this pub was in desperate need of a refurbishment.  As for the name-change, it would be possible to work out what it may revert to if we can find out what it's previous name was.

It doesn't look too bad compared with some other SS pubs in the estate. As for the name change, it might well revert back to a previous name, more fitting with a major refurbishment. Shall have to wait and see

I'm guessing that the Thai restaurant may cease to exist.

Do know whether it is directly leased by the brewery and what the terms are ?

No idea.  I just cannot see it staying though.  It's direct competition to the Samuel Smith's Green Thai Curry!

Fair enough DB. Shall jsut have to wait and see what happens. Surely any decent curry house can make a better curry than Sarahbrownridge.

I've been told what the pub is going to be called after the refurbishment.  I'm not going to publish it just yet as I could have been told in confidence and don't want to land anyone in it.  Also, I need to confirm it to be accurate.

A couple of years ago, the manager of the Robert Browning told me that the Thai restaurant is a separate business who rent the upstairs of the pub from SS and the main issue they have is the insistence that only SS drinks are served to the diners. Another totally logical decision - popping upstairs for a Thai meal after a couple of pints of Pure Brew, I wasn't allowed to have an authentic Thai lager with my food, but had to continue with Pure Brew. The food was excellent, though, and it'll be a shame if it goes and there's just another upstairs bar in there.
