General Discussion / Re: Felix the station cat.

One Samuel Smiths pub in Huddersfield.   Out of the train station by the main doors, walk ahead across the square to John William Street, turn right.   The Commercial Hotel is around 200 yards on the right.  Not the best Samuel Smiths pub I have to say.

We are thinking of going to Huddersfield this Summer to meet Felix the station cat who they have had since 2011 as a kitten and their is a book out about her. As a matter of interest are their many Sam's pubs in Huddersfield and how far are they from the station.

General Discussion / Re: Inspector Morse & SS Bottled Beers

Back in the seventies we used to go in the Crows Nest on a Sunday lunch time and have bottled beer called Green Label, what happened to that. Their used to be about five or six of us and we would all go home pissed after drinking about 4 bottles each, well at least I did anyway.

I must admit admit I miss the Strong Pale Ale and Strong Brown varieties, the India and Pale Ale are palatable but in my opinion not in the same league  --  all down to individual tastes.

Too soon,, did I feel smug having saved it to HDD. PC crashed and now gone....never had a chance to see it properly with sound (sound prob was partly the reason for PC crash anyway). Bah flinking blip!!  What harm it would do is anyones guess; I reckon he does not buy the old adage a bout no publicity is bad publicity. I mostly agree, but really.......

Yes that is interesting, I have been in many non Sams pubs and they don't even have beer mats anymore but it was one of the first things I noticed in the Angel and White Horse that they had them on every table. Are beer mats going out of fashion.

Beer mats = OUT
Sticky tables = IN!
The snootier the pub  (Ha! Pub me arse), the more studiously are mats (and bar towels) avoided.

General Discussion / Inspector Morse & SS Bottled Beers

I've been enjoying re-watching my DVD set of Inspector Morse episodes recently.  Now, when Morse isn't out and about drinking pints in pubs (probably Morrell's, Morlands, Courage etc given the locale), he's usually seen at home with a bottle, and that's very often Sam Smith's Old Brewery Strong Pale Ale.  The label is similar to the pump clip for OBB, with a black background, and I remember seeing it in off licences way back when, along with Old Brewery Strong Brown ale.

Neither of these seem to be part of the current bottled range, so when were they phased out, and what are the current equivalents?
