Name: The Bricklayers Arms - Location: Fitzrovia

Address: 31 Gresse Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1T 1QS [020 7636 5593]
Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

Not very easy to find but it was well worth it. Small bar but very friendly.

Is the current ban on drinking outside The Bricklayer's self-imposed or have they been told to do it?

Their customer base will be decimated come the summer if they don't lift it. I was there with a large group last night and a substantial number of people went elsewhere so that they could stand outside. I like the place but I'll be doing the same when the temperature picks up.

It is quite possibly the local council that has imposed the ban.  Other Samuel Smith's pubs in London have drinkers on the pavement, if I recall.

That's what I suspected.

If it is it's incredibly unfair on the pub. It's not exactly in a residential area and neither is it a rowdy pub by any means.

And you're right - other pubs - Sam Smith's and the rest - have drinkers on the pavement, including The Fitzroy, which is just around the corner.

Hopefully this is not a rule imposed by Humphrey Smith and hopefully it will not be implemented in other pubs.

It may not seem so from initial appearances, but in fact The Bricklayers is in a very residential area ! It's still a big shame if the council have imposed a ban on drinking outside. The outside area is usually very pleasant on summer evenings, and this will have an effect on the pub's takings.

Fair enough.
It may seem quite heartless of me but I have little sympathy for the argument against noise in an area that is a stone's throw from both Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street. It's not like the pub has recently opened, either.
There are other pubs SO nearby, like The Wheatsheaf and The Marquis of Granby that always have crowds of people outside and I can only see The Bricklayer's losing customers to those, and other, places. It's a real shame.

This pub always amazes me that it is inbetween two other more modern buildings and looks odd. Old and new so to speak. Were they promoting the olympics Ian, due to the flags outside.
The opinions that I express are my own !! A Fan of SSOB products. Time for a pint of OBB

Service and alcohol still as good as ever.  The customers were definitely drinking outside at the weekend.  Great little pub.....

Agreed.
Last time we were in the manager insisted on turning the pint glasses so the SS emblem faced us. Now that's attention to detail!
Wish he would ask for the hand pull OBB to be installed as the keg version is not half as good.

Keg OBB is not as good as Sovereign yet Cask OBB is better then Sovereign.
Still like all 3 formats....I wonder if SS would do a cask Sovereign.
