This advert is for the Red Lion in Horncastle, Lincolnshire.  There is no mention of Samuel Smith's, but the telephone number is the same as Weaver Hotel advert.

So the question is...

Did Samuel Smith's own Oakwell Brewery (RNBN) as per the original post, or have they just bought the pubs?

Whichever, it could represent a 10% increase in the pub numbers (less one sold/up for sale in Lincolnshire).

Given the complete lack of evidence that Sams ever had anything to do with Oakwell, and plenty of reasons why they wouldn't have, and these pubs all suddenly having a change of management, I'm confident that HS has taken advantage of some very cheap property to sell his own beers through.

Quite possibly, and the option I would put my money on.  However, it all seems odd, with lots of coincidence.

Indeed. But RBNB, RBNBC and their shareholding companies are all trading or non-trading companies. Not dissolved or liquidated, and some healthy figures there. My feelings are that Oakwell was bought by RBNB specifically for land and property with the intention of shutting it down and selling the assets.  Coincidences? Sir John Fitzgerald Ltd in Newcastle, an old independent pub company, is run on exactly the same lines, complete with feudal tendencies, and casual observer might easily suggest that HS had something to do with that. (He doesn't :))

Difference with Sir John Fitzgerald Ltd and Samuel Smiths is that SS pubs are way cheaper.Used to like Fitzgerald pubs but the prices are a joke nowadays (alongside all over pubs).

Nice one Bitterboy! No doubt now that HS has bought the pubs,  or at least some of them,  and it would seem that the conjecture that he already owned Oakwell can be finally laid to rest.
