I wasn't going to get drawn into this thread, but it remains one of my pet hates with the pub industry. If you are paying for a pint of beer, then that is what you should get. I know all of this 95% liquid caper, but still feel that if requested a pint should be topped up without question, as was the old SS policy. To cut through all of the crap why don't they just start introducing 24oz glasses, with the line marked clearly on the side. I attach a photo of a pint of OBB bought on a recent visit to The Golden Jubilee, Yarm. This is how it was served, in fact the guy that pulled it (who i assumed was the manager), checked it twice to confirm the level was right. I didn't complain as i had read the thread on here and was with friends and didn't really want a scene. I did take the precaution of telling my wife that if i wasn't there when she returned from her shopping trip, that i would be at another neighbouring pub (Fox Covert, High Leven), so i must have had half a mind on what might happen if i kicked up a fuss.

On the same topic in another SS house that i use sometimes, Humph on a recent visit was lambasting the manager about this 5% surplus and even suggested that the manager book himself on a day trip to Manchester, to the SOB in order to see how the job was done "properly".

At the end of the day if Shell or Es-so started dispensing 95% of a litre of fuel and charging for 100%, there would be hell on and beer is at least twice as expensive as petrol/diesel.

Onwards & upwards

If this is the 'norm' then use this photographic evidence and report to your local Trading Standards however they have agreed that a pint of beer can contain 5% head. Can you remember 'trophy' the pint that thinks it's a quart or exhibition? Details can be found on any council web site. Keep on and on at them they WILL investigate. You WILL get a reply. Somewhere on this web site is a history and length's of cases presented in York. Sometimes because of HS it is NOT the managers fault all you can then do is vote with your feet. Anyway Strongarm to me is a 'better' pint why not take  images side by side and compare the price difference? ?S?

PS take a piccy next time you buy a 'pint' of that black irish stuff. :DKB

Object at the BAR, it is your right, not after you leave it.  >:(

Never mind the 'fuss'.  >:(  :DD

How much Strongarm will ?1.80 buy you in the 'Crown' ?S? Suppose when your mate buys his, he complains that it's not proper Strongarm cos it's now brewed by those immigrants from Castle Eden. Not proper Cameron's.(ruby red) :BL

PS What is the address for the 'Crown' might try it, is it cask Strongarm or that 'best bitter'?  :-*

I just wanted to see what sort of measure he was pulling. I had 3 pints and they were all pretty much the same. Firmly believe that you shouldn't need to ask a "qualified" bar manager for a top up + i had seen the instances on here when people have asked for a "top up" and i couldnt be bothered with the argy bargy.

If you don't ask for it to be topped up to 95% then don't complain. I do agree however that you shouldn't have to ask for it to be topped up.
A week last Saturday I had a very expensive pint in the local casino. I say pint is a humorous way mind, the head was the width of two fingers deep - 20 -25% ish? I asked for "the rest of my pint" in a polite manor and was met with a scowl and "what" I pointed out to her the size of the head and she snatched it off me and put a thimble full more in. It was the last "pint" I had in there.
The reason I say this is to try and get it through to you all that it's not only Sam's that do the 95%, it's most pubs. Not all but most.
The petrol thing is different and not relevant at all, however you won't get a full bang on gallon there either as the pumps all work to a plus or minus tolerance, same with electric meters, gas meters etc etc. The guide lines for all of these will be tighter than 95% of course but none the less.
As for Ruby Red. ?3.60 last time I had that and that was more than a couple of years ago.

If you remember Ian / East Coast Beer Drinker the threads about the Golden Jubilee were started by Wise Old Owl and the first thing he pointed out is that he had to ask for a pint to be topped up THREE times and it still wasn't up to the 95% mark.  It just becomes a stand-off and is totally embarrassing.  If you refused to accept your pint that would be much worse than anything we have done and you would be instantly barred.  Titler goes through the motions of topping up but seems to manage only a dribble, probably why he is known as Little Titler.  The best chance of getting a 95% pint is via Ross or Nicola NOT the new management

Yes I do.    http://samsmiths.info/forum/index.php/topic,3538.0.html

That Thread was before all the name calling started.   It's that, that I believe is getting on most peoples nerves on here.   Kettlessimon posted facts without name calling, That is why I posted what I did.

Not been in The Lyceum
He has some very nice pubs in London. Particular favorites in no order - Princess Louise, Cittie of York, The Rising Sun, Angel at St Giles, Cheese (OBB could have been better last times I was in), Chandos, Horse & Groom.
After a good pint of hand pull OBB most other bitters seem tasteless.
And yes, HS is quite direct and to the point

Re: the top, can I take it your talking about a splash of lemonade in your pint?    That is a sore point with me.   Nothing to do with Sam's but in a nutshell around 40 years ago my wife (before she was my wife) and I used a social club maybe 3 nights a week. That was time when  nearly all women drank lager and lime.   The club only had 10oz & 20oz glasses and being a true Yorkshireman I complained that I was not getting half a lager plus a tot of lime.  It ended up with me buying the lager and lime in separate  glasses.  At the start the other drinkers laughed at me but within months everybody was doing it. After around a year the committee bought 12oz glasses to serve the lager and lime in.

Re: Bollicking staff in public,   totally out of order in my eyes.   It also makes him look rather foolish.

Wakey,Wakey all you Anti's and inmates just thought I would give you a quick update, hate you lot to miss out on anything otherwise you would have nothing to moan about. Lets start with Mark the ex-excellent barman he came in for a pint (or two) today, I spoke with him, he has been looking for a full time job now for several months and has got one in M/Bro, his departure is nothing to do with the Jub and he is still a regular more than that can be said for some ! His replacement started today. Food sales are increasing weekly, which unfortunately is slowing the service of drink only sales. Over the last few days we the regulars have been discussing Steve and the malicious gossip on this site he is having to put up with, although if he has any sense he would be like a movie star and ignore the critics and get on with the job. The consensus is that he is following SS policy, whether you like it or not he is doing his job and a good one, also there are another five people that have been identified that are causing bother. No names yet WOO ! As to the beer measure think of it as a glass of beer as you do on the Continent and every other country more or less and remember the price. Happy Days

Hello sweetie, very much awake.
Everything I have reported on this site about TOP-IT-UP Taffy's is accurate (not gossip) or my own opinions eg please show me where I said or implied Mark's exit was anything to do with the Jube.  As a Taffy lover it is you who are distorting the facts or making your own implications.
You will not hear from WOO anymore as he has removed himself from this site.  He suppoprted the gang of four but did not want to risk being identified and thus barred.  Many are complaining about Titlers measures eg see previous posts / picture.  You must just have more money than sense which unfortunately we are not blessed with.  Anyway roll on the winter months.  It will cost more to have the two fires in the lounge areas lit (SS policy) than the profits Titler will make from the customers in those three areas.  Mark my words.  Did you ever get your cuckoo clock or was that just gossip as well?

Our 6 Months sentence is up at the end of November - lets see if Titler is man enough to stand by his words (I very much doubt it).  Missing old friends from the Jube  :-*

JJ in my last post there was no reference to you at all apart from being part of the Anti brigade. My comments were compiled against several other posters who have contrary opinions to my own, which I believe they are fully entitled too and I agree totally with their right to express them. In the main they were generalisations not personal attacks.

As to the Cuckoo Clock it was an aspiration never gossip. The gnomes were not gossip though, short lived but quite an amusing diversion.

Regarding your "sentence" some free Chinese advice (can't spell Confucius) "We are born with two ears and only one mouth, so we should listen twice as much as we speak and say only what needs to be said" ? If you embark on a mission of revenge, first dig two graves ! If you have been thanks for reading.
