Thats all it is now, seen from the road.
It has been hammered as much if not more by the ludicrous policies of the brewery to an extent that most other companies would have long since closed it down. Mind you they wouldnt have let it slide so far into ruin in the first place would they? To deprive a pub which thrived on weddings / dinner dances of music was madness, but then to totally wreck what food trade they had left with the blandest microwave menu of all time was incomprehensible. The rumour about him banning coach parties the week of York races must have been a just a rumour ......wasnt it?

Haven't been for ages, but I'm told the Hare and Hounds at Stutton has died a death. Another tragedy, if that's true. You had to queue to get in the car park at one time.
Anybody been in lately?

The Buckles was a flag ship at one time weddings with good food and service etc. what now a sunken ship, even the conferences they have with Persimmon (the builders ) wo,nt help much as they are partly owned by Sam,s.Sorry to see a place go down hill so much.

Post by: moggy on Jul 25 - 2009
i thought the hare and hounds in Stutton was a tenancy, you used to have to phone up weeks in advance to get a table if you wanted to eat there, the food was superb and the tenants exceptional, i have spent many a happy night partying it at the Buckles, what a shame been to a few weddings there also and had a fab time. but who wants to go to a silent wedding the only music being the ping of the microwave. if this was not so serious it really would be funny, perhaps Caroline Aherne would like to do the script for a new comedy, set the scene a victorian town in the 21st century, a brewery being run by a schizophrenic Victor Meldrew, starring Uriah Heep as the conniving brother.(i must be on to a winner here)
only area managers left are extras on the muppets, or perhaps this new series could follow on from the league of gentleman,we could call it Hard times

The other Sunday the Buckles opened at 12 noon and closed at 2.00p.m. with not one customer !? Also it does not even bother to open on a Monday !!??

I used to eat Sunday lunch here regularly. There was always a crowd outside the door at 12 waiting to get in for lunch. Lovely food, beautifully clean pub and good beer. Not been for a year or more now since it fell foul of idiot Humph. I pass it regularly now around 12.30 - 1.30 on a Sunday and there are never more than THREE cars in the car park. If Humph dislikes nice pubs so much I don't see why he doesn't sell up to Mitchell and Butler. I'm sure they would be happy to peddle their plastic food under yet another brand name ;-)

This is another lovely pub that has so much potential but not used. The bar at the front is long and thin, with 2 function rooms at the back, partioned off.Had a lovely long bar at the back and then 2 large windows, also had a small room at the back for meetings and things. Was made very welcome and the pint was very good. Shame the couple are moving.

Been past this pub today and it looked rather shut early in the afternoon. Anyone know whether the managers have left or in the process of leaving. Seems odd to be shut on a Wednesday lunchtime. Answers on a post card

Been in here a few times recently and the couple running it are very pleasant.  That is possibly the reason that they have been given their marching orders by Humphrey.  Think they go in the next couple of weeks.
This was a brilliant pub years ago with wedding receptions, birthdays, christmas do's etc held there regularly, it was also a good stop for coaches going to the races and must have pulled in a very tidy profit. But now with no tellys, or music and the poor menu noone can be expected to run this enormous building and produce a profit.
I wish the next couple all the best but doubt that they will do any better

This place is the living embodiment of how badly Humphreys policies have affected trade. It has been totally wrecked on all fronts by him, is right on his doorstep and still he refuses to believe it is his fault. It can only be the managers that are not pulling their weight and so they carry the can time and time again. I am beginning to believe he will go to his grave never understanding that his efforts to make Sams more profitable in the modern age have in actual fact had the opposite effect in most cases.

I remember this as a busy lively pub many years ago and now is a shell of its former self. Such a pity with the present management couple been so nice and pleasant. As to some of the managers that are appearing in Sam's pub's at the moment. Just wonder who the next couple will be.

I believe they leave a week Tuesday.

New managers have started here apparently. They have moved from a pub in the Dewsbury area I believe.

Found myself driving past today, so I popped in for a quick half. We was the only ones in at the time.  My wife wanted ice in her drink so while the manager went "out back" for it, I had a quick dash around the place.

Non-members will be able to see some of these photos in a day or two.

Having been past this pub a number of times in October I cannot see how it can make a profit at all - it must be losing money hand-over-fist.  There is no (or little) customer base - no chimney pots, so it relies all-but entirely on passing trade.  Bilbrough itself is a distance away and why would anyone walk to The Buckles Inn‎ when the village has the quaint Three Hares Inn with four real ales?
The trade that it could get would be Sunday lunches.  I do not think that the current food offering is good enough to build the reputation needed for people to get in their cars and drive to it.

DB.

I have been past and also inside and it never seems very busy at all. Not doing much food on Sunday, as you might expect from this type of pub. Apparently it takes less than a grand a week for a pub that size is not good.

I believe the managers here that were sacked have now been reinstated after doing gardening work. Seems a little odd to me. But also glad that there is some stability out there in SS pubs.

Anyone got any more local knowledge of the situation ? Thought there was a few members from the area.

That's good to hear that he is still there. His wife died a while ago now and will be missed. Hope Humphrey lets him keep his job at this pub or another SS pub.

Yes heard he is going to another SS pub that is a single managers pub. Not sure about the entertainment license, shall have to ask around. But have heard that another supplier has been approached regarding the food. Not sure why he would want to reopen the Falcon, as all the pubs in Tadcaster are quiet enough. Without adding another outlet. He might well use the Sarahbrownridge factory for storage. Or another use.

Shall have to wait and see

Are these reliefs or the new full time managers (11 months) ? What happened to the single manager there ? Has he left SS all together or gone to another SS outlet.

Twenty plus new managers, they are staying at the travel lodge, did license on Monday at Tadcaster now H&S and food at buckles.Previous landlord was asked to stay on a little longer while training is on but had enough after the sad death of his wife and is abroad.

another attempt from the mighty humph to cause havoc again ?????????

not worth a bet i guarantee!!!!!!

wave the flag Mr smith and join in i will guarantee the bank accounts will grow if your try to show just a little consideration to customers and staff. Please note this doesn't mean reinstating TVs or make radical changes just regular nice service without all the 11 month rule etc. No one really cares how much money u got they care about your oldest independent breweries products value and quality and above all the beautiful property's u own admiring them whilst lining your pockets at same time win win. Surly it makes sense you and the brewery do soo much good work why not perfect it by showing you are actually human, cos i know from first hand your not all bad and many do admire/envy you and the no comment rule by u and the brewery is damaging your company more than you think. But we know your a very busy man and cant see the bigger picture,so why not use this fantastic bit of free forum to win the customers back you will defiantly benefit from it moral and in the bank.

AND ITS FREE MR SMITH!!!!!!

i know it all been said before but you never know he may just take heed one day and end this one way street to destruction.

Passed Buckles on our way back from a day in the Dales today. Thought, "H'mmmm.... nice pint of Extra Stout in Buckles."

It was closed at 4.10pm. All doors firmly locked. Looking deserted and on the outside pretty run down. Pity.

One of the problems with Buckles is that if you are driving east on the A64, you are passed it before you know it. An early sign might be good Humphrey. But I know you won't take any notice of me.

What a shame, used to be packed, weekends especially with the kitchen doing what they did. Trouble is with Buckles is it needs something to draw you there and it used to be the food.  Good idea about the advance sign......
Title: Re: The Buckles Inn‎ - Location: Bilbrough, York
Post by: OldBreweryDrinker on Apr 23 - 2013
I believe that the Buckles has fairly short opening times during the day, think it shuts by 2.30. Sucha  pity about the food, as it used to be very good and packed out. Seems that nobody wants this pub, as it has had reliefs in since January I think.

A sign would be good, but Humphrey won't allow it, as you can just drive past and miss it.

More and more of the SS pubs seem to be getting website of varying designs. Seems they are slowly moving into the 21st century at last.

Glad the pub is getting busier as it is such a shame that it doesn't get used as much as it once did. Also hope that they get the chance to stay over the 1 year mark as well.

i must know you.. Do you get there regular. I've heard you go in the falcon & also been angel & the Roebuck.. Name yourself man we are all SAMs drinkers.. Buckles now not bad. Bar staff a bit immature if you ask me managers not to bad. The girl behind bar now left to further education lad behind bar thinks he owns the place to moody but its up to hump who he employs. I went in today & left straight away because of certain people & barstaf.

Me and the wife have been up and down the A64 a couple of times this week and Buckles looks lovely with all the window boxes done up. It is appears really welcoming. Well done! Must pop in again sometime.

Found this while looking for something else,it seems the brewery had big plans for the place, renewal of planning permission for a two storey 50 bedroom extension.

My wife and I were in on Sat 22 August.  Food was very good, OBB was spot-on and the young man behind the bar was very polite and efficient.  Such a shame there were only half a dozen people in at 7:00pm on a Saturday evening.
